The rest of the story

The Proposal is the second half of the story that began in The Proposition. While I really enjoyed The Proposition, The Proposal fell a little flat for me.

This book begins three weeks after The Proposition ends. I want to say that I really liked both Emma and Aidan in the first book and I liked them together. In this book, I despise Emma. She annoys the heck out of me. She's self-righteous and hypocritical. To the max. Yes, he broke her heart, I get that...but...if you're going to make a promise, as Emma did to Aidan, that you will try to work things out, then the best way to try to work that out is NOT to keep throwing what he did in his face but to discuss it. Which she refuses to do.

SPOILERS:

So let's talk a minute about Dr. Nadeen. The unprofessional Dr. Nadeen who hits on Emma while she is visiting a patient at the hospital. I don't get why we needed this unrealistic storyline. First of all, an uber hot doctor falls immediately for a woman he's met once and just so happens to be 6 months pregnant with another man's child? And then Emma runs right out and does the EXACT same thing that she won't forgive Aidan for doing to her. Only she's sneakier about it. I felt as if we were supposed to be cheering her on as payback for what Aidan did. Payback is childish and this whole situation made me lose any respect I had for Emma. Or the story.

Overall, I just think I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if the bulk of the story had been about Aidan and Emma trying to truly get past the hurt and heal without silly outside influences being factored in to the equation.

Some proofreading issues that weren't overly distracting, including such things as "Noah's Arc", the misuse of both illicit and elicit and the fact that there isn't an N-13 in a Bingo game. ;)

So definitely worth a read (only if you've read The Proposition) if only to find out the rest of the story.

Boring Story Line..big disappointment

I have to start by saying that I loved The Proposition and was eagerly awaiting this sequal. I felt that the story started out great and it seemed as if there was going to be a great story line that would have me cheering for Aiden.....and then the ball was dropped along with the storyline...it just became boring. I forced myself to finish hoping that there would be something but there was nothing...

Disappointing Characters

The Proposal was a continuation of The Proposition. In the first novel, we get a picture of Emma as a "stacked" sexy good girl with a disappointing life caused by the death of her parents and former fiance. All she wants is a baby so that she can recreate a family for herself. She chooses Aidan, a player to get her pregnant. She falls in love and he does also, but Aidan runs scared and almost has a fling with a co-worker. He is caught by Emma (still fully dressed) just as he decides not to cheat. He has a backstory of doing this in his past. She dumps him and... that's where we are left with the first novel. Incomplete.

In The Proposal, a continuation of the story, Aidan spends 90 % of the novel groveling for a heroine who turns into the witch from hell. I began to dislike Emma and I think it was because there were too many conflicting views of her. On the one hand she is a "good" girl from a christian family, but on the other turns into a sex addict with a filthy mouth, then a callous woman. She moves into Aiden's home so that he can take care of her when she is put on bedrest for pre-term labor. He had to take leave from his job. Then he takes groveling to the max while putting up with her. And this is where Aiden lost some of his appeal. In most stories Aiden could have explained himself and his "almost cheating" if he was experienced with women as we are led to believe, and the story could have finished with the first book.

I didn't buy the 'love triangle' storyline, it just seemed so forced and far-fetched. A doctor would hit on a woman in the ER who is obviously in advanced pregnancy? And then she allows him to visit her at her boyfriend's house on the pretext of a house call? She was just plain unfeeling when she went on dates with the hot doctor while being taken care of by Aiden in his house. The book finally just became tedious and I was sick of Emma and her pregnancy with the numerous sex scenes in late term pregnancy way before the book ended
Emma's sexual actions were explained as "pregnancy hormones". Really?
Her strange behavior in the witch category continued when she took Aiden's dog and had him castrated without Aiden's permission.

While the first book was fairly good, this book just was not. I began to find the characters boring and I hated that, because they had promise.
Will not be buying the next book about the hot doctor in the story.

In Kansas City, African American families opposed to the district court's efforts organized a takeover of the school board and requested that the court case be closed. Joshua Dunn argues that Judge Clark's ruling was not the result of tyrannical "judicial activism" but was rather the logical outcome of previous contradictory Supreme Court doctrines. High Court decisions, Dunn explains, necessarily limit the policy choices available to lower court judges, introducing complications the Supreme Court would not anticipate. He demonstrates that the Kansas City case is a model lesson for the types of problems that develop for lower courts in any area in which the Supreme Court attempts to create significant change. This was never about race it was about taxes.

As the author stated this is a mostly forgotten case. I only remember because I lived in Kansas City at the time. However I never attended the Kansas City school District. I remember vividly the number of times tax increases were put to a vote of people and it failed every single time. So supporters of increased taxation used this farce of a desegregation case to steal more money from the people and got a federal judge to sign off on it. However as the author shows this case was never about desegregation or about improving the education for local children it was about corrupt politicians stealing more money from the local citizens.

I am finding this book fascinating. The subject matter is complex, but the author has taken the time to synthesize the material so a layperson can understand deeply and meaningfully. I recommend that all education leaders and political leaders take the time to read Complex Justice. To paraphrase a great quote--if we do not know our history, we are destined to repeat it--over and over again to the detriment of our young people.

Of interest only to those already interested.

No single rating could suffice for this book. It covers two quite different topics--(1) the rough and tumble of education policy and politics, and its financing, as played out in a city where, not long ago the Pendergast machine was In Charge; and (2) teh dream that the federal courts and agencies could remake the system to root out what remained of discrimination by forcing a dysfunctional school board, with a virtually unlimited budget, to create a new .system of such excellence that it would lure white students back from the suburban districts to which they had fled o escape the schools. It is not surprising that this quixotic effort failed. What is astonishing is that a number of intelligent people thought it had a chance of success.

My own interest in the book was as an attorney who feels strongly that our courts should not be making policy--that's the job of our elected officials. This book is red meat for anyone with that philosophy. But at almost 200 pages of text, and a number of footnotes I admit having not read, I found it quite a bit too long. I would have been satisfied with a "think piece" in one of the few remaining magazines which offer such material--perhaps The Atlantic. Having said which, if one is looking for an encyclopedic report on what can go wrong when well-meaning people try to implement bad plans, it's all here. But I would think anyone interested in the issues would already be well aware of how petty the bickering of frustrated folk convinced of their own rectitude can be.

My only other criticism is that even as an attorney quite familiar with articles laden with case references I had difficulty with his handling of the cases that lay behind the difficulties with which the District Court and Eighth Circuit were struggling. To most readers, including me, the names of the cases appearing in text some number of pages after after they first mentioned doesn't bring back to mind the principle (if any) of that case. Far more helpful to assign a nickname to the few key cases, so that when they reappear it is easier to remember what they stood for. And to avoid citation of more than a single case to illustrate a point--it isn't necessary.

With no prior knowledge of the case, I felt that Dunn was an excellent autor. He took pains to explain why decdisions were made as they were, and avoided casting blame too casually.

This is a good overview of the book. It gives you the main ideas, but there are no photos to assist with the exercises. I see this more as a short way to see which parts of the "real" book to investigate further. I don't think it stands on its own though.

I'm a retired minister with an avid interest in mysteries and the unexplained, especially mysteries related to Christianity. I also love to watch crime shows and now I've turned these interests into writing. Saint Gabriel's Gospel, my first novel, was a long time in coming, but now I can't seem to stop writing. I've finished two others that are about Gabriel and Nicki, the main characters in that novel, that are waiting to be published. I'm currently writing one about a creepy serial killer who is obsessed with women's lips. It seems that mommy...well, just be on the lookout for Lips Sweeter Than Wine.

Remember the price you paid

As I read some of the negative reviews I can't help but wonder what some people were expecting. Sure, there were typos and grammatical mistakes. (Which made the dedication to an English teacher a bit oxymoronic.) I also found myself sighing every now and then when an adjective was used instead of an adverb or subject / verb didn't agree... But compared to some of the $1, $2, or even $5 Kindle books around? This one is LIGHT YEARS ahead of them! And remember one thing...

It's a 99 cent book folks! Overall, I got a fairly enjoyable story without having to pay a major publisher level price. I think instead of bashing independent authors like this we should be encouraging them while sharing constructive criticism. If you hate being charged $12 or more for what amounts to a file download, then remember that you're getting a bargain here. Mr Harber, I liked the story: You could use some editing assistance but I'll be purchasing your follow up novels...

I really enjoyed this book. It is an exciting mystery surrounding an archeological dig in old Jerusalem. It held my attention from the very first page. The plot, setting, and characters are interesting and well developed. Not only is it entertaining, but it is full of interesting information about how archeological digs are carried out. It gave me a greater appreciation of the knowledge we gain from the tedious and time consuming labors of those committed to discovering the past. I read with great anticipation as the various plot twists unfolded. I highly recommend the book to anyone who enjoys mystery, suspense, and Biblical history, .
