All Sergeant Evrial Yara wanted was to protect the young emperor from those plotting to kill him. Joining forces with a group of notorious outlaws wasn’t part of the plan, especially not when one of them is determined to charm her out of her uniform at every turn. Working with the criminals might have been worth it if their efforts had saved the emperor, but it seems he’s not the rightful heir to the throne.... Evrial may have thrown away her career for nothing.
To make matters worse, fate isn’t going to give her time to calmly decide what to do next. While she’s traveling back to the capital with Amaranthe Lokdon and the rest of the outlaws, Evrial uncovers artifacts that have been smuggled aboard their steamboat. They’re deadly enough to threaten the entire city, perhaps the entire empire. Oh, and they could kill everybody on board the boat too. These scenarios just weren’t discussed in the Enforcer Academy.
This 56,000-word novella takes place between Books 5 and 6 in the Emperor’s Edge series.

Not your average "day in the life"
By McReadsALot
Okay, it may be an average day in the life of the EE team.
This is a novella intended to be read between books 5 & 6 of the Emperor's Edge series. Without that background it will still be a funny, enjoyable read, but won't make a whole lot of sense. If you're looking to sample the Emperor's Edge, may I suggest Shadows Over Innocence (an Emperor's Edge short story) or the first book, The Emperor's Edge, both of which are free. :)
If $2.99 seems a little high for something listed as a "novella" let me assure you that it is just over half the length of a regular novel and reads like one. This is by no means a mere "short story." After the intensity of "Conspiracy" and "Blood & Betrayal" it was nice to see a bit more of Buroker's skill with levity. There is still intensity and some good ol' fashioned action, but there was room for the characters to relax and breathe as well.
While we still have Amaranthe's counterpoint, the main focus is on Evrial Yara, a new and uncertain addition to the group. Uncertain because she doesn't know where her loyalties lie, and getting inside her head was a real treat. She has an outsider's perspective on the group, which we haven't actually seen before, and her reactions to their interactions can be priceless. After her experience with them on the train and battling with Forge, Yara still has to make up her mind about whether she will stay with the team. Will she support Sespian, or go back to her life as an enforcer? Now that she's been seen with them, does she even have the choice?
As for the story - we join the team hiding out on a passenger ship making its way back to Stumps. They manage to come across a few Forge members, an acrobatics troupe, one of the most intimidating weapons we've seen yet (this is where having read Encrypted comes in handy), and most surprisingly of all - an explosion. Or two.
Things I loved about this book include the easy movement forward in relationships - familial, platonic, romantic, and physical - that could have involved lots of drama and angst but progress smoothly without either. This cannot be simplified down to "a romantic interlude" because there's far more to it than that, but that does happen too. ;)

Must Read for Emperor's Edge Fans
By KinDallas
In this novella, which I'm calling EE 5.5, Amaranthe and her motley crew are lying low on a steamboat bound for the capital, in hopes of stopping Forge's master plot (if that didn't make sense, download The Emperor's Edge. It's free and it will get you started--you won't be sorry!). Of course, for this team, nothing ever goes as planned and while on board the ship they discover a nefarious plot that could bring great harm to the city.
Narrated in dual POV by Amaranthe and Sergeant Yara (the team's newest addition, and one of my favorite adds to the series), this story also takes a decidedly romantic turn as Yara continues to be pursued by Mal. Amaranthe and Sicarius 'shippers will be especially happy...and there are plenty of awkward, funny moments to go around as well. Several one-liners will likely become infamous quotes for the series going forward, and I laughed out loud frequently during my read. The story also sets the stage for the sixth book, Forged in Blood, which promises to be quite epic.
For fans of the Emperor's Edge series, this novella is a must-read.

Not to be dismissed!!
By C. Jones
So this was way more than I was expecting from a "novella"! I am horrified that I almost didn't read it because I thought it would just be a bit of filler to get readers through till the next book's release date. But this book is actually one of my favorites of the series so far! I felt like we got loads of character development in this installment especially in the relationships between characters-- specifically, Sespian and Sicarius (ok, so its slow going with these two but at leas they now know where each other stand), Maldynado and Evrial, and of course we get to see some playfulness come into Sicarius and Amaranthe's relationship! I love that the author took the opportunity to advance the plot in a way that would allow this unlikely team she has created to step in front of the action for a bit. I have greatly enjoyed this series as a whole (about to start book 6) and love the characters, plot, and delivery! I especially appreciate the snarky humor (I can often be found grinning from ear-to-ear while reading these books) and the chemistry between all the characters! I am enjoying watching them grow together, learn about each other and learn to appreciate each other. Amaranthe is one of my favorite heroines ever! She reminds me of Veronica Mars-- I always hear Kristen Bell's V.M. voice over voice for her especially when she is thinking to herself!! I am trying to slow down and enjoy the last 3 books since they are the "last 3 books" but it hard not to just devour them. If you like adventure, action, suspense and mystery with a little romance and lot of "not-taking-itself-too-seriously"... this series is perfect and whatever you do, don't skip this "novella"!
