The Devil: A Mask Without a Face (Picturing History), by Luther Link

Today we imagine the Devil with horns, tail and pitchfork, but medieval and early Renaissance artists saw him very differently. In illuminated manuscripts, mosaics, frescoes, and carved capitals he is to be found in a bewildering variety of forms and guises. The lack of a stable pictorial model, misreadings of Mesopotamian and classical figures, and the Church's own shifting response to heresies, have all helped determine how the Devil was represented. Who he really was and why he looks the way he does can only be understood by probing the political and theological controversies of the times.
Why is the Devil never shown suffering in Hell? How is it that he sometimes appears to be doing God's work? What is the origin of his characteristic flaming hair, and where did those instruments of torture, wielded by his cruel assistants, come from?
This book, which covers the sixth to the sixteenth centuries, draws on original sources, including colorful accounts in the Apocrypha of the Devil's origins and his true first crime, the writings of St Augustine and other Church Fathers, and reports of the intrigues of popes and emperors. Luther Link offers us unexpected insights into a wide range of artworks, from the carved capitals in the Romanesque church of St Benoît and Giotto's famous Arena Chapel frescoes to Michelangelo's Last Judgment in Rome. The result, the first comprehensive account of the arch-fiend in art, is a fascinating study in the history of visual representation.

Another Reaktion Books Success!
By Amanda Chesworth
The book begins with a quote by Origen: "No one can know the origin of evil who has not grasped the truth about the so-called Devil and his angels, and who he was before he became a Devil and how he became a Devil..."

This understanding is exactly what the author sets out to provide and he does so with great mastery and interest.

Luther Link knows his subject matter incredibly well. The whole point of the "Picturing History" series by Reaktion Books is to study the artwork of a given subject and use this as a primary source in understanding that subject's history. In many ways, I have found this to be a far more accurate and useful way of learning the history of the subject and Reaktion Books are leaders in the field.

I found the histories of the devil to be fascinating - at times, he was the archenemy, at other times he seemed essential to the concept of God or even as His handmaiden. In other examples he was a mere slave of God and it was not him that did the soul-snatching but he simply suffered eternal damnation along with all of the humans who were sent to Hell by God. The pagan influence was surprising - Lucifer once being a good character but like many pagan ideas, was turned bad by Christianity. This is a mere drop in the bucket to the information provided in _The Devil_.

The art is rich and liberally sprinkled throughout the book. The source of the images is given and we become privy to information doubtfully unearthed before - where the horns, pitchfork, and tail originate. The naked versus the hairy devil - the deformations. Most strikingly, perhaps, is the morphing from angel to demon. The "angelic" and "demonical" behaviors are explored and found to be quite diverse in history - angels often being quite demonic themselves. One piece I found especially powerful was the reproduction of Signorelli's "The Damned." I immediately went surfing to find myself a print!

There is a period of time where very few artpieces are found depicting the devil. The author speculates why this may be but he doesn't entertain the first thought that came to my mind - perhaps it was seen as blasphemous, or inviting evil, to do so. Of course this is just another speculation and one no where near as grounded as those of the author. But considering the great amount of superstition to be found in history, I expect there was at least an inkling of that - much like people were once forbidden to create artistic renditions of God - for other reasons.

With so many books now coming out on the history of the devil or the hierarchy of hell, largely for sensationalist reasons, this book really must be read to show how far superior it is to others. The scholarship is of highest quality which is likely why Reaktion Books caters more to academics than to laypeople. I find this unfortunate though. As a layperson, I highly enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who finds this subject interesting. Reaktion Books would be wise to follow Taschen and Phaidon's lead in bringing their books to a wider audience.

The first chapter doesn't pull the reader in as it should but it's definitely worth sticking it out because in later chapters it becomes a page turner. Not intimidating in any way.

Especially for those trying to make sense of the many stories told about the devil, this book provides our best possibility and it leaves the reader satisfied with an understanding that can be drawn on for years to come.

The Coming Insurrection (Semiotext(e) / Intervention Series), by Invisible Committee

The Coming Insurrection is an eloquent call to arms arising from the recent waves of social contestation in France and Europe. Written by the anonymous Invisible Committee in the vein of Guy Debord ― and with comparable elegance ― it has been proclaimed a manual for terrorism by the French government (who recently arrested its alleged authors). One of its members more adequately described the group as "the name given to a collective voice bent on denouncing contemporary cynicism and reality." The Coming Insurrection is a strategic prescription for an emergent war-machine to "spread anarchy and live communism." Written in the wake of the riots that erupted throughout the Paris suburbs in the fall of 2005 and presaging more recent riots and general strikes in France and Greece, The Coming Insurrection articulates a rejection of the official Left and its reformist agenda, aligning itself instead with the younger, wilder forms of resistance that have emerged in Europe around recent struggles against immigration control and the "war on terror." Hot-wired to the movement of '77 in Italy, its preferred historical reference point, The Coming Insurrection formulates an ethics that takes as its starting point theft, sabotage, the refusal to work, and the elaboration of collective, self-organized forms-of-life. It is a philosophical statement that addresses the growing number of those ― in France, in the United States, and elsewhere ― who refuse the idea that theory, politics, and life are separate realms.

Scary--NOT because of their plan, but because of their analysis of current events.
By P. Eisenman
This is not the type of book one looks at based on the usual "do I like it?" criteria. It's NOT that kind of book.

THE COMING INSURRECTION is, simply put, a manifesto. It is dull and wandering. As a "workable plan" for a society, it is the usual Marxist utopian vision of all men enjoying the benefits of nobody's exploited labor.

And as scary as the idea of anarchists and Marxists rioting in the streets is (Don't LOOK--they're doing it right now in France on 10/22/10), the really scary part of this book is the authors' analysis of the state of Western Civilization. This is not so much a condemnation of Capitalism by Marxists--we're all familiar with that--but, rather a clear outline of the hardcore Marxist view of Progressivism, community organizing, Environmentalism and Social Democratic ideas.

The contention the authors have that Western Civilization is IN collapse and not in "crisis" should cause you to consider whether or not government action is designed to prop up the free-market economy and society or whether they are merely trying to prop up the FACADE of the free-market economy and society. Ask yourself if the authors are right when they conclude that the negation of ideas has become the norm and whether or not current society exalts those who believe in nothing and demonizes those who hold to principles. Ask yourself what REALLY drives those in government and the environmental movement and compare it to what the authors think is the motivating force.

DRAW YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS. If you want to stick your head in the sand or don't want to give up the comfortable idea that everything will be alright because it's always worked out OK before, that's your choice. Otherwise, agree or disagree with what these people believe, you SHOULD read this book. It's dull, it's rambling and it's unpleasant at times, but it's 3 hours (audio book time) that will enlighten you as to what's really going on in some people's minds. Whether you are Conservative OR Progressive, you should know that these people view YOU as their enemy.

++++AUDIO BOOK PRODUCT REVIEW+++++++
No problems with audio playback. Narrator Christopher Lane does a very good job. Given the subject matter, he's not dull or boring. His voice is pleasant, clear and he enunciates well.
FOR THE PRODUCT I give FIVE STARS.

For the book I give a generic, non-opinionated 3 STARS. I'm neither endorsing nor condemning the CONTENTS of this book. I just think that the wise person, who is concerned one way or the other about the future of western civilization owes it to themselves to see the current world from the perspective of The Invisible Committee.

Revolution Already Underway
By Orville B. Jenkins
This somewhat bizarre, yet intriguing, commentary on contemporary society and the building revolt against the governmental and economic oppression being felt is set in France. This version is a translation from the original, which includes good endnotes that clarify some references to French agencies, governmental or commercial entities and revolutionary or terrorist groups.

But American readers (hearers) will instantly be able to envision the analysis in the American context. This is not a classic format nor is it classic content. The authors' introduction clarifies that this is not a composition based on their own viewpoint It does involve an analysis or reflection on what they have observed.

The oral presentation is well done and easy to listen to. They present this as a compilation of comments and viewpoints they have picked up and recorded in barroom discussions and backrooms, ion street corners and in various locales where the general populace discuss the problems of the day. They present a basic view that can be called Marxist in the formal sense, and they carefully define their viewpoint, indicating that their commentary on what they have compiled focuses on the perspective of group or society, that is, communal concepts.

They dissociate the term commnune-ism from the classic Leninist concept known politically as Communism. They describe what they understand as communal living in society. The perspectives here seem closer to Marx's original analysis of early capitalist industrial society in Europe. But you will see it is not exactly Marxism as we have known it, either.

The perspective is quite disdainful about the possibilities of the current society, but does not fit neatly into what we have known as "Communism" in the 20th century. Much of the ideological rhetoric is similar. The committee zeros in on the City, the modern urban area, as the stealer of identity that causes isolation and traps individuals and families in economic cycles they cannot control. They attack the materialistic focus of modern consumerism.

The reader-listener, though, needs to listen carefully to sort out what they are really saying, not just try to dump these guys into a comfortable, recognizable bin of classification so they can be easily dismissed. As Glenn Beck says in the cover notes, "... And let me tell you something: Don't dismiss tthese people."

This analysis might be helpful. And I daresay many Libertarians as well as self-styled "Conservatives" in the US will agree with much of the view of government they find here. At any rate, the commentators relate informative instances from recent history, the last hundred years or so and in recent days, to indicate a rising discontent with the entrenched patterns of government, and the increased pressures of government and the allied corporate structures upon the common people.

What they are talking about is commented on regularly in the American phrase "I just can't seem to ever get ahead." The committee indicates how they see the wave of recent protests in European cities related to this growing discontent that they say is bubbling higher and higher into a full-blown insurrection any time now, if economic and social conditions do not improve.

One thing many will agree with is the analysis, drawn out in Disk 3, that the solutions to the many problems identified on a worldwide scale are being presented by the same people who caused the problems. The cynicism of the committee's perspective is somewhat supported by their analysis that the proposed solutions are usually primarily beneficial to the very same financial and industrial sectors that seem to have caused the problem in the first place.

It appeared to me that they are not so much advocating violent overthrow of governments and business systems as describing the process already underway. Think about it: if they wanted this to happen, why would they be warning people about it!? They could just be quiet and let it happen. Now that they have warned us, the insurrection might be prevented.

On the other hand raising awareness of the causes of discontent, which constitute injustices, might raise a clamour to change the conditions. Maybe they think if they warn people it is already happening, the rest of us who are so frustrated with the government intrusions and incomptences will join the insurrection and make it happen more quickly! Hmmnnnn.

At any rate, what is important to me is that they have identified that it seems to be happening. They have flagged key events and trends as indicators. This is the important aspect of this work. For instance, the Longshoremen's strike on the US west coast in 2002 shut down the US import business from Asia for 10 days. This event showed how easily the strongest economic power in the world could be brought to its knees. See what you think about the description and their understanding of the situation.

This work is interesting, though somewhat bizarre, as I commented initially. Thoughtful, and fact-filled, but the droning ideology seems to suffer from the over-simplification most other current political ideologies suffer, settling for too simple an explanation. But you will find valuable the instances they cite and describe.

The great limitation of the ideological aspect of this is that I heard no proposal of a society that might take the place of the current econo-industrial-police state once the insurrection becomes sucessful.

This is where utopian views have always failed. This is where Lenin's implemented program immediately failed to meet the standard of his purported guide, Karl Marx. Lenin sold out Marx. He actually overthrew a people's republic that had already overthrown the Czar. He focused on the power and the control.

The "Communism" that resulted was just another form of the same materialistic dehumanization, it just limited personal freedoms even further, and the oppression took a different, but no better, form.

The particulars of the instances they relate need to be in your conscious awareness as you try to figure out what is happening in our society and world at large, and understand the dynamics. This is a perspective you need to take into account.

Look all around you today and you can take the news and protesting straight from the pages of this book. It's proof of society gone terribly wrong. Proof that massive entitlement programs only breed contempt.

I could get really philosophical about the book but I won't. It's worth reading, it's very political, very left-wing and very, very frightenng.

Refreshingly unique street lit
By Amazon Customer
Good story and lesson in the form of an entertaining read. This author is quickly becoming one of my favorites, as his work steers away from the same-old-same-old that is often seen in street literature. His work is unique and refreshing, and this title is no exception.

One of the most interesting Americans who lived in 19th century was a man by the name of Russell Herman Conwell. He was born in 1843 and lived until 1925. He was a lawyer for about 15 years until he became a clergyman.

When Doctor Russell H. Conwell talked about each of us being right on our own "acre of diamonds" he meant it. This story does not get old...it will be true forever.... Opportunity does not just "come along". It is there all the time - we just have to see it.

A perfect wife?

Everyone in Mary's family agreed that she would make some man a perfect wife one day. Mary's problem was that the only man she had ever even thought about marrying was eminent heart specialist Roel van Rakesma. But it had been clear from the start that any attention Professor van Rakesma paid her was purely professional. His only interest was in curing frail hearts, not mending broken ones!

Mary Pagett, stripping a bed with energy, was singing at the top of her voice. Not because she was happy, but to quell the frustration within. For her father—that charming but absent-minded man—to invite Great Aunt Thirza to spend her convalescence at his home had been a misplaced kindness, bringing with it a string of inconveniences which would have to be overcome.

For a start Mrs Blackett, who came daily to oblige and suffered from a persistent ill temper, was going to object to peeling more potatoes and scraping more carrots, not to mention the extra work vacuuming the guest bedroom. And Mr Archer, the village butcher, was going to express hurt feelings at the lack of orders for sausages and braising steak, since Great Aunt Thirza was a vegetarian, and for reasons of economy the rest of the household would have to be vegetarian too.

There was her mother too—Mary's voice rose a few decibels—a lovable, whimsical lady, whose talent for designing Christmas cards had earned her a hut in the garden to which she retired after breakfast each day, only appearing at meals. Lastly there was Polly, her young sister, who was a keen and not very accurate player of the recorder; her loving family bore with the noise but Great Aunt Thirza was going to object..

Mary finished making the bed, cast an eye over the rather heavy furniture in the high-ceilinged room, with its old-fashioned wallpaper and wooden floor, sparsely covered by elderly rugs, and hoped that the draughts from the big sash windows opposite wouldn't be too much for her elderly relation.

The house—a mid-Victorian rectory built for an incumbent with a large family—wasn't all that old. After standing empty for some years it had been bought by her father, since it had been a bargain at its low price. But he, an unworldly man, had not taken notice of the size of its rooms, which made heating the place almost hopeless, or the lack of maids, or the fact that coal for the enormous grates was a constant drain on the household purse—nor had he considered the amount of gas and electricity which was needed.

He had his study, where he worked on his book, and Mary's pleas for someone to clear the drains, paint the doors and put tiles back on the elaborate roof fell on deaf ears.

Her father was a dear man, she reflected, but unworldly. He was devoted to his wife and children, but that had never prevented him from delegating the mundane responsibilities of a married man to someone else and, since Mary was so conveniently there, they had fallen to her.

It had happened very gradually; she had left school with hopes of going on to university, but her mother had been ill and her two brothers had been home, and someone had had to feed and look after them—besides which Polly had still been a little girl. Her mother had got better, the boys had gone to Cambridge, but no one had suggested that Mary might like to do anything but stay home and look after them all. She had stayed quite willingly since, despite its drawbacks, she loved the shabby old house, she liked cooking, and she even liked a certain amount of housework.

So the years had slipped quietly by, and here she was, twenty-four years old, a tall, splendidly built girl with a lovely face, enormous brown eyes and an abundance of chestnut hair, her face rendered even more interesting by reason of her nose, which was short and tip-tilted. It went without saying that the men of her acquaintance liked her, admired her and in two cases had wished to marry her. She had refused them kindly and remained firm friends, acting as bridesmaid at their weddings and godmother to their children.

There was Arthur, of course, whom she had known for years—a worthy young man who rather took it for granted that one day she would marry him, and indeed from time to time she had considered that possibility. He would be a splendid husband—faithful and kind even if a bit bossy. He was also a shade pompous and she had doubts as to what he would be like in ten years' time.

Besides, she had no intention of marrying anyone at the moment; the boys were away from home but Polly was thirteen—too young to be left to the care of a fond but unworldly mother and a forgetful father. Right at the back of her head was the half-formed wish that something exciting would happen—something so exciting and urgent that her prosaic plans would be dashed to pieces…

The only thing that was going to happen was Great Aunt Thirza, who was neither of these things, but a cantankerous old lady who liked her own way.

Mary went down to the kitchen and broke the news to Mrs Blackett, who paused long enough in her cleaning of the kitchen floor with far too wet a mop to scowl at her and grumble with such venom that her dentures got dislodged.

'As though we 'aven't got enough on our 'ands. And it's no good you expecting me to do more for you than what I do now.' She gave a snort of ill humour and sloshed more water over the floor.

Mary, side-stepping the puddles, made soothing noises. 'When you've finished the floor,' she said cheerfully, 'we'll have a cup of tea. I wouldn't expect you to do more than you do already, Mrs Blackett, and I dare say that Great Aunt Thirza will spend a good deal of time resting.'

Knowing that lady, she thought it unlikely, but Mrs Blackett wasn't to know that, and the latter, calmed with a strong cup of tea and a large slice of cake, relating the latest misdemeanour of Horace, her youngest, became sufficiently mollified to suggest doing a bit extra around the house. 'I'd stay for me dinner and do a couple of hours in an afternoon—it'd 'ave to be a Tuesday or a Wednesday, mind.'

Mary accepted her offer gratefully. 'It will only be for a week or two, Mrs Blackett.'

'Where's she coming from, then?'

'She's in St Justin's. Her housekeeper will take whatever clothes she needs to the hospital and an ambulance will bring her here.' Mary gave a very small sigh. 'Tomorrow.'

'You'll want more spuds,' said Mrs Blackett. 'Going ter get a nice bit of 'am?'

'Well, I'm afraid that Mrs Winton is a vegetarian…'

'I don't 'old with them,' said Mrs Blackett darkly.

Nor did Mary, although she sympathised with their views.

She took a basket from the hook behind the kitchen door and went down the garden to pick beans, pull new carrots and cut spinach. Thank heaven it was early summer and her small kitchen garden was flourishing, although she would have to go to the greengrocer presently and get more vegetables, as well as beans and lentils and spaghetti. She hoped that Great Aunt Thirza would like that, though she was doubtful if anyone else would.

Before going back into the house she stopped to look around her. The house was on the edge of Hampstead Heath, with Golders Green not far away, and the garden offered a pleasant view and she stood admiring it. It would be nice to spend a day in the country, she reflected, and thought of her childhood, spent in a rambling cottage in Gloucestershire.

They might still be there but for the fact that her father had needed to be nearer the British Museum so that he could do his research and her mother had wanted a closer contact with the agent who sold her cards. Polly hadn't been born then, and although it hadn't mattered much to the boys, who had been at boarding-school anyway, Mary had taken some time to settle down at her new school and make new friends.

She went back indoors and presently out to the butcher, where, since it was likely to be the last meat they would have for a while, she bought steak and kidney in a generous amount and bore it home. It was a warm day for steak and kidney pudding but she was rewarded that evening by the pleasure with which it was received.

'Everything all right, dear?' asked her mother, and before she could reply added, 'I've had a letter from Mr Thorne—the agent—he's got me a splendid commission. I shall have to work at it, though—you'll be quite happy with Great Aunt Thirza?'

Mary assured her that she would. She wasn't surprised to hear from her father that he would be away all day at the British Museum. 'But I'll be home in time to welcome Thirza,' he said. 'Make her comfortable, won't you, my dear?'

'I'll play her "Greensleeves",' offered Polly.

'That'll be lovely, darling,' said Mrs Pagett. 'It's so nice that you're musical.'

Mrs Winton arrived the next day in nice time for tea. She was tall and thin with a high-bridged nose, upon which rested her pince-nez, and she wore a beautifully cut coat and skirt of the style fashionable in the early decades of the century, and crowned this with a wide-brimmed straw hat. She had the same kind of hat, only in felt, during the winter months.

Mary had gone to the door to meet her and watched while the ambulancemen settled her into a chair and trundled her over.

'That will do, thank you,' said Great Aunt Thirza. 'My niece will help me into the sitting-room.' She turned to look at her. 'Well, Mary, here I am.'

Mary kissed the offered cheek. 'We are delighted to have you to stay, Aunt.' She stopped as the men turned away. 'If you'd like to go to the kitchen—the door over there—there's tea and sandwiches. Thank you both so much.'

She had a lovely smile and they beamed back at her. 'If that's not troubling you, miss, we could do with a cuppa.'

'Would you like tea, Aunt Thirza? It's all ready in the sitting-room.' She gave the old lady an arm and settled her in an armchair by the small tea-table. 'Father's at the British Museum; he'll be back at any moment. Mother's very busy; she's just had an order for Christmas cards.'

'Ridiculous,' said Mrs Winton. 'Christmas cards, indeed—child's play.'

'Actually they need a great deal of skill, and Mother's very good at them.'

Her aunt sipped her tea. 'Why aren't you married, Mary?'

'Well, I don't think I've met anyone I want to marry yet. There's Arthur, of course…'

'A girl should marry.' She pronounced it 'gel'. 'I don't hold with this independence. My generation had more sense; we married and settled down to be good wives and mothers.'

Aunt Thirza was in her eighties. Mary wondered what it had been like to be young then—corsets and hats and gloves, not just on Sundays and occasions but even to go shopping, and not to be able to drive a car or wear trousers.

On the other hand there had been no television and there had been dances—not the leaping around that was the fashion now, but foxtrotting and waltzing. Waltzing with a man you loved or even liked must have been delightful. The clothes had been pretty awful, but they were pretty awful nowadays among the young. Mary, who sometimes felt older than her years, sighed.

Great Aunt Thirza was quite a handful. She had brought a good deal of luggage with her which had to be unpacked and disposed around the house according to her fancy. She poked her nose into the kitchen and made scathing remarks about Mrs Blackett's terrible old slippers with the nicks cut out for the comfort of her bunions; she inspected the fridge, lectured Polly on her untidiness, interrupted her nephew in his study and swept down to the hut to see her niece-in-law, where she passed so many critical remarks that that lady was unable to pick up her brush for the rest of the day.

It didn't matter how ingenious Mary was with the lentils, dried peas and beans, her elderly relation always found something wrong with them.

At the end of a week, having escorted her to her room, shut the windows, refreshed the water jug, gone downstairs again for warm milk, found another blanket, run a bath and listened to her aunt giving her opinion of the drawbacks of the house, Mary went downstairs to where her mother and father were sitting in the drawing-room—a room seldom used since it was large, draughty and, despite Mary's polishing, shabby.

'When is Great Aunt Thirza going home?' she asked her father, sounding cross.

He looked up from the book he was reading, peered over his glasses at her and said mildly, 'I really don't know, my dear. She's no trouble, is she?'

Mary sat down. 'Yes, Father, she is. She has made Mrs Blackett even more bad-tempered than usual—she's threatened to leave—and Polly is rebellious and I can't blame her. I haven't cooked a square meal for more than a week; I don't expect that you've noticed but there's not been an ounce of meat in the house for days and I, for one, am sick of spinach and lettuce leaves.'

Her mother looked up from the sketches she was making. 'A nice steak with mushrooms, and those French fries you do so well, darling.' She added hopefully, 'Could we go out for a meal?'

'It would cost too much,' said Mary, who knew more about the housekeeping money than her mother. 'We need a miracle.'

It came with the postman in the morning. Great Aunt Thirza was bidden to attend at St Justin's in Central London where she had been treated for a heart condition—nine o'clock on the following morning. Should her examination prove satisfactory she could make arrangements to return to her home and resume a normal life.

'I shall, of course, abide by the specialist's advice,' said Great Aunt Thirza. 'He may consider it more beneficial to my health for me to return here for a further few weeks.' She poured herself another cup of tea—the special herbal one that she preferred. 'You can drive me there, Mary. It will save the expense of a taxi.'

Mary didn't answer. Mrs Winton was comfortably off, well able to afford as many taxis as she could want; she could afford to pay for the peas and beans too, thought Mary peevishly.

To waste most of a day, certainly a whole morning, taking her aunt to the hospital was tiresome when there was a stack of ironing waiting to be done, besides which she needed to thumb through the cookery book she had borrowed from the library and find another way to cook kidney beans.

Polly, back from school at teatime, gobbling bread spread with an imitation butter, heavily covered with peanut butter, voiced the opinion that Great Aunt Thirza was quite well enough to go home. 'Let her housekeeper cook that rabbit food.' She rolled her large blue eyes dramatically. 'Mary, I'll die if I don't have some chips soon.'

'Perhaps I could have a word with the specialist,' mused Mary.

'Yes, do. Wear something pretty and flutter your eyelashes at him. You're quite pretty, you know.'

'I don't expect that kind of man—you know, wildly clever and always reading books like Father, only younger—notices if one is pretty or not. If I had a heart attack or fainted all over him he might, I suppose.'

She spent a moment imagining herself falling gracefully into the arms of some doddering old professor. It wouldn't do; she wasn't the right shape. Fainting was for small, ethereal girls with tiny waists and slender enough to be picked up easily. Whoever it was who caught her would need to be a giant with muscles to match. 'But I will wear that green dress and those sandals I bought in the sales.'

loved
By She Treads Softly
I have been buying Betty Neels books for my mother (in her 70's) at her request, as an introduction to using a Kindle. I can say without hesitation that she loves all of these books. As she has said, "The plots may all be somewhat similar and the stories quaint, but I enjoy them immensely and find them endearing." What better recommendation could there be? And the Kindle Paperwhite? She loves the backlight and the ability to make the font larger.

Taken advantage of
By Camillia Mitchell
I would have liked this story better if Mary wasn't always taken advantage of with total disregard for what she wants. The Aunt especially was a total witch and Mary's parents forgot the very fact that they were parents and should have acted like ones.

Some great secondary characters, but . . .
By P. Shropshire
Mary Pagett has loving if somewhat absent-minded, airy-fairy parents along with an adorably feisty younger sister (also two brothers but we know nothing of them other than they are away at school). Her father is an intellectual who gets swindled out of much of his capital and anticipated inheritance from Great-Aunt Thirza (a real piece of work, but she dies early on).

Mary long ago took over the running of the household from her mother, an artist who paints Christmas cards. But she has to earn some money so she takes a job as a mother's help which turns out to be not as advertised.

The RDD (who Mary met when he treated Aunty's heart attack, and fell in love with) can't bear to see her slaving so he conspires with Polly to get Mary a more suitable job, in a bookshop belonging to an old friend of his.

Roel van Rakesma thinks this will help him stop thinking about Mary. He even welcomes the Veronica, Ilsa van Hoeven, to visit him along with his younger sister, Pleane.

Well, Pleane is delightful, a slightly older Polly, but Ilsa is Not Delightful.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Roel and Polly. They exchange Mary-secrets and Roel tells Polly he intends to marry Mary.

Other wonderful characters include Fred, Roel's manservant (whom Ilsa would discharge) and Nathaniel. Nathaniel was a homeless man that Roel treated for a heart attack and subsequently hired to caretake his country cottage.

Plenty of angst in this one , from financial worries to Mary having to cook supper for Roel, Pleane and Ilsa at a moment's notice to the trouble caused by Ilsa's malicious machinations.

3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Principles of the Kingdom of God is the title of this Book. This Book explores spiritual principles as opposed to the principles of this present age. In everyday life we are well familiar with the principles that operate here on the earth. We know that when a door is shut we must open it in order to pass through. We know that touching a hot stove will cause pain and a burn. Science is aware of the rules and boundaries of the laws of physics and chemists know the results of mixing elements together to cause a certain result. Although there are many of the scientific laws of nature currently unknown to mankind, he continues to strive to find answers and to reconcile the scientific world of which we are aware using out five senses.

What science does not understand, or is unwilling to admit, there is a realm beyond the certainties of this physical realm that is incapable of scientific proof. That realm is called "The Spiritual Realm". Most deny its existence or if they mentally assent to the possibility that such a realm exists they know little about it and certainly don't apply it to their everyday lives or scientific pursuits. Some look on such things as foolishness as the Apostle Paul said: "But a natural [unspiritual] man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised" (1 Corinthians 2:14).

However, as this book will attempt to point out, the spirit realm is very much a real place, actually more real than our physical world. The spirit world has its own set of rules and principles that govern it. However its ways are past finding out by the natural mind of man and thus invisible to those without spiritual sight. The Apostle Paul said in the Bible: "because the human mind is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so" (Romans 8:7). Thus our intellect is useless in knowing anything beyond what we can see or touch.

Just taking the most basic of the spiritual laws, the 10 commandments for instance, who can argue that we all would be a little better off if everyone was able to follow these basic rules? There would be no crime, therefore no expensive jails to confine criminals. The family unit, which has been broken down in this generation, would stay intact as children would respect their parents; there would be no adultery to break up the family and coveting would all together cease. There would be no serious disparity between the rich and the poor and the poor would be taken care of without great expenditure of funds to do so. There would be no greed, war, competition etc. just to name a few.
