About the Author
Ellen Jones was born in New York City and raised in a family of history teachers and musicians, who exposed her to a variety of ideas, cultures, and lifestyles. After graduating from Bennington College, she spent a few years studying drama in graduate school, which led to her first writing efforts. After getting married and while raising two young children, Jones wrote two plays, one set in eighteenth-century Vermont and the other based on Japanese history. These two works were performed by the Honolulu Theatre for Youth in Hawaii. Jones and her family then moved to England,, where she fell in love with London and its colorful history. During her five years in England, Jones was able to explore the country; she also traveled throughout Europe, including a visit to the French region of Aquitaine. Her travels deepened her interest in history and the seeds of her novels began to take root. Jones made her fiction debut with The Fatal Crown (1991), a historical novel about the twelfth-century British princess Maud. This launched Jones’s trilogy about three strong, passionate, and self-willed founders of the Plantagenet empire: Maud, Henry, and Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Tapestry of History

The epic saga of Eleanor of Aquitaine and her husband Henry the II. In a time of arranged marriages and court alliances, Henry and Eleanor had something of a love match, fueled by passion and desire, for each other and to conquer England. A short time later, Henry has done just that. He plans to introduce a new system of justice that will help heal the country and it's people, but he is betrayed by good and trusted friend Thomas Beckett. Eleanor stands firm at her husband's side and lends her own considerable power to his efforts. But when she discovers her husband has been unfaithful to her with a beautiful, younger woman, Eleanor's heart and pride are destroyed. Her only desire now is to destroy the man she once loved, even if it means turning his own sons and his own subjects against him.
Jones weaves an incredible tapestry of history, characters from history books come vividly alive, and mighty rulers are portrayed as the flawed human beings they were.

This book rather emphasizes the fiction over the historical at most junctures. The book itself starts after the betrayal of Thomas Becket. They are still a passionate couple, but they are deeply enmeshed in the politics of Aquitaine and France. Eleanor's deep concern to rule her home country has begun to leach upon their unity. Henry begins the affair with Rosamund that hardens Eleanor's heart against him and begins the seeds of her manipulating her sons against her husband.
The historic events are primarily the setting for our character's motivation. While the dream of a just and unified kingdom remains in Henry's heart, it is chilling the number of battles and deaths play out against this love-hate marriage. And as time goes on, another woman enters the ranks of history, young Alais, the king of France's sister.
The history of the era lacks for no plotting, revenge, falsity, passion. It is set through the eyes of Eleanor and thus is a primarily private book. It reads well, and is easy to follow despite the many complexities. Sometimes we seem to have better insight into Eleanor than she herself even with her superior state knowledge. It is an interesting book of its time.
