What it takes to be a leader

First this is a reprint of this book. The author passed away in 2004 and the publisher, David C. Cook, decided to release another copy. This book has very practical advice for all Christian leaders.

Helping others become better at their jobs and becoming better people are two main goals of any good leader. The author points to many examples both Biblical and personal. Using the examples from these people's lives the author shows ways to be an effective leader.

Worried you can't be a good leader? Following the advice in this book, you will learn to trust the Lord to be your guide. I liked how the author used the example of Moses to reiterate this principle. Unsure of himself, Moses had to trust God to teach him what was necessary to be the leader Israel needed.

Using examples from his own experience helped make this book a personal one. I thought his examples really showed the Lords handiwork and some of the benefits other leaders could have if they rely on the Lord as well. The questions at the end of the book are for a more in-depth study. Working through the questions within a group setting will glean the most benefit.

I gave this book 4/5 stars. I thought some of the writing was a little boring at times. I put the book down and came back to it after a few days. I found it did have some sound advice that would help any leader.

LEARNING TO LEAD WITH PURPOSE

A leader who will not learn is just a person with a title thus books such as "Be the Leader You Were Meant to Be" by Leroy Eims are important. By taking a close look at leadership both from personal experience and from a biblical perspective the author is able to share a wealth of information that will assist even the most established person in authority to become better at leading.
There is not much in terms of leadership that is not covered in this book which makes it an important book for new leaders, future leaders and leaders who are experiencing personal frustrations. "Be the Leader You Were Meant to Be" will assist the reader in making the necessary adjustments in his or her role as leader by sharing the ups and downs in the life of Moses, one of the bibles greatest leaders.
For me this book was a review of leadership lessons I have learned in the past as well as insight into areas in my life that needed adjusting, such as the chapter on "Resolving Conflicts". I think everyone who wants to go into leadership should pay very close attention to the first chapter "Who Is Fit To Lead". We all need to read and re-read the chapter ""Why Some Leaders Excel".
"Be The Leader You Were Meant to Be" is a great book to read as an individual. With the addition of a study guide this book is an excellent tool to use for leadership training. I recommend this book.

The climate of India was very bad for children, and as soon as possible they were sent away from it—generally to England and to school. She had seen other children go away, and had heard their fathers and mothers talk about the letters they received from them. She had known that she would be obliged to go also, and though sometimes her father’s stories of the voyage and the new country had attracted her, she had been troubled by the thought that he could not stay with her. “Couldn’t you go to that place with me, papa?” she had asked when she was five years old. “Couldn’t you go to school, too? I would help you with your lessons.” “But you will not have to stay for a very long time, little Sara,” he had always said. “You will go to a nice house where there will be a lot of little girls, and you will play together, and I will send you plenty of books, and you will grow so fast that it will seem scarcely a year before you are big enough and clever enough to come back and take care of papa.” She had liked to think of that. To keep the house for her father; to ride with him, and sit at the head of his table when he had dinner-parties; to talk to him and read his books—that would be what she would like most in the world, and if one must go away to “the place” in England to attain it, she must make up her mind to go. She did not care very much for other little girls, but if she had plenty of books she could console herself. She liked books more than anything else, and was, in fact, always inventing stories of beautiful things and telling them to herself. Sometimes she had told them to her father, and he had liked them as much as she did.
