The Story Behind an Oscar Winning Science Fiction Clasic

I was four years old when George Pal' s "Destination Moon" came out and it took me 63 years to read Robert A. Heinlein' s original short story. The wait was well worth my time. Along with the short story is an article by Heinlein detailing the making of the film and the tricks he witnessed to bring his vision to the 1950 Hollywood screen. Whether you love science fiction, or the movies this book is for you.

A classic film now available again as a book

"Destination Moon" was one of the seminal low-budget science fiction films from the early 1950s, and though the idea of four friends building a rocketship and then flying to the moon and back seems archaic today (we know it takes more technology, for instance), the movie successfully broke the cycle of mutated bugs and bug-eyed alien films that marked what the movie studios of the time thought about the s-f genre. Robert Heinlein was instrumental in the making of the film, along with several other rocket scientists of the time (mostly Germans then living in the United States following WWII), and this is both the book version of the story and his writings about the making of the film. Those who saw the movie will remember its rather minimal plot but great special effects; those who have not seen it, now have an introduction to a classic film work.

the way we were.

Interesting short story. Out dated, but giving fascinating into the level of technological thought in those days, as well as social and cultural attitudes, and levels of patriotism prevalent. Plus a good story, well told.
