Well-known for her vampire romances (Twilight Illusions), Shayne now turns her talents to witches. When Raven St. James was accused and hanged for witchcraft, the only person who tried to save her was the priest Duncan Wallace. Raven, who in fact is an immortal witch, flees the small 17th-century English village before her accusers realize the truth, but not before she shows herself to Duncan, who is mourning her death and cannot believe his eyes when he sees her alive. He follows her to America, where small-minded villagers grow suspicious of Raven's exotic beauty and strange healing ways. She is again accused of witchcraft, and this time Duncan loses his life attempting to save her. For 300 years, Raven waits for her lost love to be reborn, spending her time saving other witches from the stake and hangman's noose and further developing her powers. Finally, in 1998, Duncan comes to life with the help of Raven's witch sister, and the two meet again. Love takes a while in coming, though, for the reborn Duncan is skeptical of Raven's fantastic tales of witchcraft and immortality, and doesn't believe the rumors that his father is an evil warlock out to kill Raven. Shayne thankfully shies away from analyzing the Salem witch trials and instead gives readers a rich, sensual and bewitching adventure of good vs. evil, with love as the prize.

Great Read, the characters felt very real!
By A Customer
I loved this book and the sequel!
Maggie Shayne has created character with depth, and a storyline that will have readers cheering for the hero and heroine. *G* Also, I loved the way she weaves the magic into her books.
As far as bashing Christians...well, I don't think if I were the heroines of these two books and had been persecuted in the name of religion I would be very forgiving either. Hanging and watching your friends being burned to death would do that. I'd probably have major attitude problems towards organized religion, so I don't think it would be in character for these characters not to feel this way.
When you learn that there were entire villages in Germany with *no* women left after the witch hunters were through then you can understand something of the horror of that time and the scars it would leave. Once someone was accused of being a witch, there was almost no way to escape. They even managed to burn Joan of Arc for being a witch! All of this is historical fact, and so, in keeping with the development of these characters.

A Love That Endures Through Time Itself
By Clarissa
Unlike most mushy romances this actually holds substance. The dialogue is witty, crisp, and clever. She writes with the promised prose of more to come as the future unfolds. So I deem it safe to say that Maggie Shayne is rapidly becoming one of my favorite fantasy writers, and I guarentee that even romance haters will enjoy this as the emotions are raw and filled with realistic depth....
Three hundred years ago, the good citizens of Sanctuary believed there was a Witch in their midst...
Her name was Raven St. James, a woman whose unearthly beauty and beguiling charms inspired rumors of Witchcraft. Only one man tried to save her from the hangman's noose--Duncan, the town minister, who thought it strange that anyone could accuse this lovely and vibrant woman of anything wicked. Strange still was the fact that Raven WAS a Witch. And even though she held the power to save herself, she could not rescue Duncan--who died trying to save her...
Three hundred years later, the immortal Witch searches for the one soul who truly loved her...
At last, after centuries of lonliness and longing, Raven has found him. Her precious Duncan has returned--reborn in the body of a man who has no memory of the past they shared. Yet Raven knows that the heart can never forget true passion. Their souls are destined to be together. But as Duncan reawakens to the power of Raven's love, so too does the evil that tore them apart three hundred years ago. Now Raven and Duncan must prove their love--for all eternity...
This is undoubtedly one of the most engaging, beautiful, and enchanting reads I have ever endured through. If only it could go on for all eternity...

Just okay...
By Tennessee Steph
I really wanted to like this book. The blurb was interesting and even the first 50 pages had me thinking, but it just didn't deliver in the end. I'm not traditionally a huge romance reader, but I was interested in this one because of the supernatural aspect which was just okay for me. The author didn't create a new world, if you will, where I tried to think ahead about the "what ifs" and I believed it was really possible. It had potential hence my early interest, but it just got forced and not thoroughly written. The seemingly random sex, most often at incredibly inappropriate times, was too much for me. It just didn't fit the story. Also, the editing is terrible. I stopped counting how many times "father" was "rather" and quotes were missing for dialogue. My advice is take this one as what it is - brain candy.
