A Good Academic Summary of the Progress Made in Trade Theory, But Perhaps Not the Book for Every General Interest Reader

Buy this book if you are interested in the latest economic trade theories coming out of academia. This may be because you are a student wishing to improve your competence, or you are someone who is really into economics and international trade issues. But be cautious in buying this book if you are just an interested citizen, perhaps coming to this subject through an interest in the moral, inequality or world poverty dimensions of the subject. Perhaps the title "Understanding Global Trade" could be misleading in implying it is a suitable introduction for the complete novice, when in fact perhaps a more suitable title should be "Understanding the Progress Being Made in the Academic Theories of Global Trade".

The premise and tone of this book I would say are firmly within the pro free trade economic establishment, as there is little mention of any contention or dissatisfaction with the status quo. The book deals in the objective empirical questions of why global trade patterns form in a certain way, and not in the more reflective or moral questions of where these patterns are leading different countries, which are the questions which appeal more to me and perhaps also the general interest reader.

The first part of the book deals with the fundamental and essential foundation principle of comparative advantage, which in my view everyone should be taught at school. But if you are not already hot on this subject perhaps a standard textbook would be more appropriate.

As an example of its content, the later part of the book deals in detail with summarising the academic progress made in understanding and predicting when and where international production patterns involve offshoring through owned foreign subsidiaries or outsourcing to independent firms. This part of the book reminded me of a good business economics book I read years ago about the way that the make up and ownership patterns of all firms are influenced by the pros and cons of different contractual arrangements, different incentives and different principle agent issues. I mention this as it gives an indication as to the themes and approach of this book; it is hardcore economics complete with equations and diagrams, and arguably not really general interest.

I definitely learnt a few points from this book. For example; the "home market effect", the theory that firms in large countries with a large home market have an in built advantage. Or secondly that it can be useful to differentiate sectors or products into contract-intensive and non-contract intensive, and that it can be shown that supply chains which require detailed enforcible complex contracts end up being produced in countries with capable infrastructure to provide this. Or thirdly "tariff jumping" where companies choose to invest in a subsidiary producer in the previously importing country to avoid the tariffs being levied. (Toyota building US factories in response to the US protection of its car market in 1973 is given as an example).

So I was glad I bought this book, and I hope this review has helped the right people to buy it / not buy it also.

Terrific treatise on trade

Elhanan Helpman, Harvard professor of international trade, is definitely among the foremost economists of his generation. In a mostly non-technical language, the present book reviews the evolution of trade theory from Adam Smith to the most recent decade. In particular, Helpman provides a clear account of the ground-breaking developments of the 1980s and most recent approaches that explain today's world of trade - of why some firms become multinationals and others remain firmly local. Many readers will welcome that the book, which targets a broad audience, is equation-free. While there is indeed no maths, I have, however, my doubts whether readers without the necessary technical background will really find it accessible. "Hicks-neutral TFP differences" or "melting iceberg trade frictions" are not exactly self-explanatory notions.

The selection of topics is, as Helpman admits, somewhat biased and reflects his personal research interests. A lot of emphasis is put on "pure" trade theory (including the extensions and ramifications of the classical and neoclassical approaches), as well as the impact of trade on income distribution and labour markets. There is much less coverage of policy issues or the political economy of protectionism. Although there is a long chapter on classical trade theory, Paul Samuelson's 2004 article on potential drawbacks of globalization in a Ricardian model, as well as the subsequent debate, is surprisingly missing. Equally astonishing, not a single piece of work by Dani Rodrik, trade and development specialist at Harvard, is quoted. On the other hand, the book's simplified presentation of the Melitz model on trade with heterogeneous firms, rather hard stuff in its original version, is just brilliant. Moreover, the book's bibliography is as gigantic as an Ultra Large Container Vessel. Thus, those who look for a complement to an International Economics textbook or who are interested in a review of recent literature undertaken by a champion in his field will find it highly useful.

Addictive and junky

My 4 year old found out about these books from a friend of hers. We've read the entire Rainbow fairy series out loud as bedtime stories.

I am a believer in encouraging children to read. If these books do this for your children, great. I could easily see how this could be the case. The author clearly understands 4-6 year old girl psychology and exploits it fully to create truly addictive series.

However, as a mom reading aloud to her child, I would have to say that the adventures in the books are almost nonsensical even given the premise of fairy magic (at least taken as a series--this particular book is not so bad), the dialog and vocabulary insipid, and the characters uninspiring.

Rachael and Kirsty solve problems not with common sense, bravery or ingenuity, but by using magic fairy bags given to them by the Fairy King and Queen. Their biggest challenges seem to be 1) running away from goblins (which look about 5 inches high in the illustrations) and 2) remembering to use the magic fairy bags when the goblins frighten them too much.

I also feel exploited. These books are $7 each, in series of addictive stories which could each easily be fit in one book. The Rainbow series alone will set you back $7*7=$49 if you pay the cover price of $6.99, and there seems to be no end in sight to the collections. Each book can easily be read in 1-2 sittings, so $6.99 doesn't get you much.

Another aspect which bothers me is this: the Rainbow fairies wear trendy teen age type clothing and are stick-thin. Rachael and Kirsty are extremely thin and trendy looking too. My 4 year old will be bombarded with these kinds of unrealistic body images by the media as it is. I don't want them appearing in her bedtime stories.

My advice (at least to parents who are going to read these aloud): don't start. There are so many better choices. Once you start, your child won't let you stop. So if you are going to read these, get them from the library. Make sure you can get the whole series since these are fast reads, with each story encouraging your child to read the next one.

Rainbow Magic; be prepared to buy the set

The premise of the Rainbow Magic is that two vacationing girls meet and rescue seven fairies who have been banished to Rainspell Island by the evil Jack Frost. Pretty simple and straightforward stuff. The girls' characters are somewhat boring and bland. Although I've read over 20 of these books I still have a hard time keeping track which girl is which; that says a lot about how little we are told about the girls' personalities, etc. Each of the books is a mini-story; you will have to read all seven in the series in order to find out if Fairyland is saved by the return of the Rainbow Fairies. Then, there are several other sets of fairy books out there by the same author (Weather Fairies, Jewel Fairies, Fun Day Fairies, Party Fairies, Petal Fairies, Pet Keeper Fairies) so there is really no end to what that naughty Jack Frost will do and the girls keep helping out the fairies to save the day. Gets.sort.of.old.for.grownups.after.awhile. Many of the other series are not even for sale in the US yet; it seems as though Scholastic is picking them up and releasing them slowly. If your girls get really into the RM books then you'll be searching the ebay listings looking for the series that are only available overseas. A note, the UK/Austrailian versions are slightly different. For instance, the girls get in the "queue" at the carnival, instead of the "line". Or they come home for "tea" instead of a "snack". And of course in the UK there are just words that are spelled a little different. Just so you all know if you're chasing down the non-US series.

But moreover, the RM books are light, driveley books. None of them are really great literature or will show kids great writing. BUT, my daughters just love them and they motivate my reluctant reader to WANT to read. They will be among the first chapter books appropriate for little girls, 1st or 2nd grade unless you've got an early reader. There's nothing you'll find offensive or distasteful (like, say, Junie B. Jones). They will not learn as much as reading something like the Magic Treehouse series. They are cute little books and fun for girls to collect.

I am impressed and highly recommend Mr. Sawicki's Book

Wow! It covers enough information on the current art of special effects to give the neophyte an excellent overview of what's possible and for the professional to accomplish.
This book is going on my shelf next to Raymond Fielding's The Techniques of Special Effects Cinematography, Bernard Wilkie's Creating Special Effects for TV & Film, Special Effects in Motion Pictures by Frank P. Clark and Bernard Wilkie's The Technique of Special Effects in Television. The huge advantage for Mark's book is that it brings the classic techniques into the digital age. It is full of Illustrations and photos that serve his text well.
Mark's experience from decades of personal and notable professional work is evident from the real world solutions he offers. His personal anecdotes and techical instructions give the reader useful and practical knowledge of a wide variety of techniques.
What I liked is the appreciation and references to the great masters of effects like Willis O'Brien and Albert Whitlock and many others.
Mark Sawicki knows his stuff and presents it for the curious and the advanced film maker.
Well done. I highly recommend this book. A must for Effects Artists everywhere. I kid you not!

If you are interested in effects. GET THIS BOOK.

I'm only on the 3rd chapter of this book, but I had to write a review as it has made me incredibly excited!

Not only does it cover a lot of ground, it also is written in a warm tone that makes you excited to try out these techniques. Marc is more concerned with telling a good story and preplanning over the current trend of "fix it in post with CGI and $$$". After reading his introduction alone, I knew I had made the right decision in buying this book.

He also has learned from some of the great FX people of the 70s and infuses this wisdom into the book. In several cases, he outlines in absolute specifics (down to what lens they used). This is invaluable!

In conclusion:
After the first chapter, I immediately wanted to head out and start shooting FX work.

You can't get much better than that.

A book on effects for everyone.

Mark Sawicki's book, is a wonderful resource for those interested or involved with the history and creation of visual effects for film and TV. This book would be a great addition to a visual art students library - teachers will also find the practical exercises excellent, while film industry professionals will find the advice and commonsense approach to making visual effects invaluable. I should stress that this beautifully illustrated book is different to the glossy (and all too common) "how we made the effects for such-and-such blockbuster", Filming the Fantastic is much more real and practical, always encouraging the reader to learn by trying things for themselves.

Filming the Fantastic is about creating visual effects - not just those made by computers. The use of miniatures, matte painting and clever planning demonstrate how time and money can be saved while producing outstanding results. Marks professional effects experience provides the framework for the book, backed up with interesting anecdotes and exercises for the reader make their own special effect shots. A really unique feature of this book is showing how to deal with the inevitable situations where there has been little or no planning prior to filming.

This substantial book is crammed with photographs and diagrams, illustrating the text and clearly explaining concepts for the reader. There is considerable depth to the theory sections on colour, perspective and lighting, making the book a fine reference work for any filmmaker. The exciting thing I found about this book was sections such as "So you don't have a million dollars" - which go into making effects with a low budget or if you are challenged for time. Effects are created using home video equipment with simple props - ideas on how to create you own blue screens, superimposed backgrounds, stop motion animation, people falling out of buildings, crowd replication and even a pan across an airplane crash scene, can all be created with a few dollars and a few hours. This may make the book sound too simplistic for a professional, however "in camera effects" (as they are called) are becoming more rather than less common in feature film production. These "tricks" are recognised as time savers in the professional industry.

In summary this well written book is very easy to read with clear thought out examples for students, teachers and professionals. Great illustrations and photos explain the key concepts thoroughly while the broad topic range make the book relevant for many people and situations.

A great gift for yourself or anyone interested in the magic of movie making. My advice is to dust off the camera and try the effects for yourself!

Homer, Goethe and Tolstoy are third rate peddlers of cheap storytelling next to this titanic pillar of fiction. It's safe to say that nothing profound may ever be written again that is not simply a bungling imitation of this novel.

Erudite, Suspenseful, and Disgusting

We're All Gonna Die! is an entertaining read. It's short and action-packed overall. It's like a Steven Spielberg movie, but sometimes the novel takes pleasant dips into morality and philosophy. My biggest problem with the book is that it is disgusting. Noia revels in blood and guts. Also you'll need to keep a large dictionary handy when reading this book. I guarantee you'll run into words you've never heard of, most likely in the first few pages. Looking up new words was fun, even when they related to blood and guts.

Working in a high school library, I read many books I would normally not choose to read. A zombie apocalypse book is probably very close to the top of my "I'd rather not read" list. However, I surprisingly enjoyed this book, blood, gore and all. It was smart and well-written; and I loved the wry humor. I will definitely recommend this book to students - and adults!

An excellent quick introduction to Cyberspace threats

There are plenty of detailed books on hacking and cybersecurity, but if you need a crash course in the basics of the field, or a broad definition of the issues and potential impacts, this is a good place to start. You can move on to a lengthier and more detailed technical study later if you are so inclined.

This eBook reprints several articles originally published in the Washington Post in 2012 as parts of a series on cyberattacks and the threat they represent to governments and large businesses around the world. I had not previously realized the extent to which cyberwarriors are beachcombers and prospectors rather than brilliant designers of electronic warfare environments. They scan millions of lines of common code in the ubiquitous operating systems and control software on the Internet, testing for weaknesses with automated routines that write bad instructions here and there to see what happens. Once they find an action with an unanticipated but non-fatal consequence, they can zero in on the weakness and -- all too often -- find a way to into a control system that grants them the power to do great damage.

You will probably never get this kind of concise, explanatory reporting from any broadcast media source. It takes some actual sit-down investigative work over a period of weeks and months to develop a sense of the battlespace and the tactics and strategy needed to maneuver in it successfully, and then to report and explain it clearly to curious readers. All praise to the Post for laying out so clear an introduction to the threats and complexities of the Internet-controlled future in which we will all spend the rest of our lives.

If you are aware of the threat of cybercrime and cybersabotage but don't really have a grasp of how these threats operate and where they originate, this informative short eBook is a good place to start. Recommended.

Over the past 10ish years I read much of the information in this book but Zero Day tied it all together for me. Leaves me doubting that the USA has this anywhere near under control or even understood well enough to mitigate the danger.

Excellent insight and very understandable

This is a very enlightening series of articles that delve into how, by being more connected in our day to day lives, we are increasingly vulnerable to hacking or worse. What is the scariest is that our vulnerabilities will not be reduced anytime soon.
