A small jewel, must be read for those who love and care for animals!
By Amazon Customer
I sincerely hope that this review somehow reaches Ms Bragg, for my original idea was to write to her directly - but I could not find her e-mail address...
Apart from being a well written book (which it undoubtedly is), the story itself is deeply moving - actually, it had me in tears!
Being a dog lover and a proud owner of a Sheltie puppy, I could totally relate to the author's dilemma and to the very complicated situation she narrates.
I pray that someday we will evolve into better, more spiritual beings, and therefore will give to all animals the full respect and consideration they deserve; until then, all efforts should be made to curtail those preposterous 'puppy mills', shameful places which do not have a place in civilized societies.
Thank you very much, Ms Bragg, for opening your heart to us; please be sure that a tiny part of Buddy still lives, and will live as longe as you remember him so fondly as you've shown us.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Word that Redescribes the World: The Bible and Discipleship, by Walter Brueggemann

In the last several years, Walter Brueggemann's writings have directly addressed the situation of Christian communities in today's globalized context, with its consumerist lifestyles, vast inequalities, and near-imperial exercises of power. His insights, forged in rugged encounters with the texts of the Old Testament, are sharp, painful, and indispensable. In the People of Israel Brueggemann finds a model of an alternative community — anchored in YHWH, ever exploring new possibilities, and prophetically bent against empire.

About the Author
Walter Brueggemann, through his teaching, lecturing, and writing, has effectively demonstrated the significance of the Old Testament for our fractured world today. Recognized as the preeminent interpreter of the ancient texts in relation to questions posed by a variety of academic disciplines, he has shown the way toward a compelling understanding of the major components of the faith and life of ancient Israel, especially its Psalms, the prophets, and the narratives. His award-winning Theology of the Old Testament (Fortress Press, 1997) quickly became a foundational work in the field.

Patrick D. Miller is Charles T. Haley Professor of Old Testament Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary and the author of two Fortress Press volumes: They Cried to the Lord: The Form and Theology of Biblical Prayer (1994) and Interpreting the Psalms (1986).

A Prophetic Voice that is Sure to Challenge all Readers
By Craig Stephans
William Brueggemann's collection of eloquently written essays challenges readers to awaken to God's call for holiness and radical engagement with our neighbors in the world. Newly available in paperback, these were written between 1998 and 2004 and originally published as a collection in 2006. Brueggemann divides the essays into three sections that emphasize the unique nature of the Biblical text as inspired by God, the substantive claims of the text highlighting the impossible possibilities of life with God, and the imperatives of the text understood for the Christian as faithful obedience lived in true discipleship.

In demonstrating what he proposes for preachers, Brueggemann speaks "truth to power." The truth resonating in all of the essays is the indictment that Christianity in the West has succumbed and acquiesced to a culture defined by an ideology of "technological--therapeutic--militaristic--consumerism." He proposes that Christians must give themselves fully to the countercultural, Scriptural mandates of "generosity, compassion and forgiveness grounded in a daily commitment to study, prayer and fellowship."

The goal of the Christian life of discipleship is forming a community that at once demonstrates God-given peculiarity and relational engagement with the culture. This communal life proclaims to the world that all human power is penultimate before the creator God who speaks and acts in his creation. For Brueggemann, the Scriptural text provides the missional energy, imagination and identity of the "baptismal community." These virtues counteract the timidity and cultural collusion from which the church suffers.

In identifying himself as "post-liberal," Brueggemann puts forth a high view of Scripture and imagination. The author seems to keep the relationship between the two flexible enough for him to stray from orthodox views on something like sexuality and claim that he is "reimagining" God's expression. So, at times, Brueggemann appears to interpret Scripture subjectively giving more weight to liberal cultural leanings than prior orthodox exegesis and praxis. He also will insert some political statements sort of out of the blue throughout the book that are distractions.

As a collection of essays, the book lacks a progressional theme that a traditional book would follow.

Readers cannot come away from these essays unchallenged or unchanged. The ethic of resistance and engagement that Brueggemann puts forth demands a response equally vigorous and passionate. In that sense, he finds himself in the company of the prophets that the Old Testament scholar so highly esteems.

I just glanced over the material herein thinking that I may want to purchase this book. DON'T!!! This is a dangerous man and as I read over his biography and training and the information confirmed my beliefs. I want to preface in all fairness that I am an ethnic Roman Catholic and not a Vatican II Catholic. Thus I am a Tradition and Ethnic Catholic. Yes, my ancestors came from Rome thus Italy. We have important Christian names. Brueggemann should also be known as Boggyman comes from a judaic institute and the wicked United Counsel of Churches sealed his book " The Word That Redescribes the World." The UCC is a forerunner for the One World Religion. You must understand that Protestants were chiefly involved with the infiltration of Vatican II and the slaughter of the Solemn Mass. Vatican II is the Whore of Babylon and not the Church founded by Jesus Christ upon Saint Peter's statement of Faith " Thou are God the Living Christ." It was upon that statement Saint Peter founded the Church of Rome along with Saint Paul who wrote most of the bible...and while in prison nevertheless. The mission of Protestants was to stealthily move the Latin Mass away from its Holy Foundation and closer to the Calvin sermon. John Calvin was a French Jew! To put it another way...a warlock's bride is a witch. The Bride of Christ is, and has been since its inception the Holy Roman Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ. At the Mystical Head of this Church is Jesus who is Almighty God and at the visible head of the Church is Christ's Vicar the Lawfully elected Pope and the Clergy. The Laity is therefore the Body. The Mother of this Body aka Church is our Blessed Mother the Ever Virgin Mother Mary. Saint Mary! Any other church...I REPEAT...any other church...NO MATTER WHAT is a whore!!! Stay away!!! The reformation's vatican is the United Council of Churches and they believe in Ecumenism. Which, Canonically is unlawful. Boggyman is following his master's mission; And that mission is a new church aka The Church of Satan.

"Did you really think you could keep my child from me?"

Jada stopped on the courthouse steps, the hair on her arms standing on end, the back of her neck prickling with cold sweat. It was the voice of her most dreaded nightmare. A voice she'd never heard before outside of her dreams, and yet she knew that it was him.

Alik Vasin.

A stranger. The man with the power to come in and rip the beating heart from her chest if he chose to do so. The man with the power to devastate her life.

The father of her daughter.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Jada said, inching up the stairs that led to the courthouse. But she knew. She absolutely knew, and apparently he did, too.

"You had the court date changed."

"I had to change it," she said, defiant, confident in her lie. It didn't feel wrong, or even like a lie, not when she'd told it to protect her child. Jada had spent her life behaving, following the rules, but there were no rules for this situation. There was no right, no wrong. There was only need. The need to keep Leena with her.

"And you thought that since I had to travel halfway around the world on short notice, I would be forced to miss it. Too bad for you I have a private jet."

He didn't look like the kind of man who owned a private jet. He didn't look like a man ready for a court hearing. He was wearing low-slung jeans, held onto his lean hips with a thick belt. He had a rumpled button-up shirt on that somehow looked all the better for being wrinkled, the sleeves pushed up past his elbows, revealing muscular forearms. And aviator sunglasses. Like he was some sort of rock star or something.

He turned his hand and adjusted the buckle on his watch, revealing a dark tattoo, an anchor, on the underside of his wrist. She wondered, briefly, how much something like that had hurt. She wondered what it said about him. He was danger personified, and just looking at him made a shiver course through her body.

On the plus side, his blatant lack of regard for convention made her feel more and more confident about her chances. She'd had Leena in her custody for a year, after all. And this man, her father, had no claim on her beyond the genetic.

Blood was certainly thicker than water, but dirty diapers trumped blood. And she had changed more than her share of those over the past year.

He looked at his watch. "Looks like I've made it with time to spare. I'll be back in a moment."

"Don't rush," Jada said. She took a seat in one of the chairs that lined the door outside of the family courtroom. She wished she could hold Leena right now, but Leena was with the social worker. Jada's arms felt empty. She picked her purse up from the floor, her phone out of one of the pockets, opened an app and played it mindlessly. She just needed to keep her hands busy. And her mind vacant.

"Good. I didn't miss anything."

She looked up and a swear word rushed out of her mouth. He looked…it wasn't fair how he looked. He was in a black suit, open at the collar, everything fitted perfectly to his well-muscled physique. The dark fabric poured over him like liquid, flowing with his movements, revealing strength, power. He looked like the sort of man who got what he wanted with the snap of a finger. The kind of man who had women falling at his feet with a glance.

He'd gone from rumpled traveler to James Flipping Bond in ten seconds flat.

Although, Bond was always fighting the Russians, so maybe he was more of a Bond villain.

"I see you decided to dress for the occasion," she said.

He'd removed the sunglasses, and for the first time she could see his eyes. They were somewhere between blue and gray, like the sea during a storm.

"It seemed the thing to do," he said, his lips quirking up into a smile. He seemed entirely unruffled, as if the outcome of this didn't matter to him at all. It meant everything to her. This, Leena, was her entire life. All she had left.

"It seemed the thing to do? Well, I suppose it's good that going out for Chinese food didn't seem the thing to do at the moment instead. Is that all she is to you? Just…is this just an experiment for you? Why did you even bother to show up?"

"She's my daughter," he said, his tone betraying no emotion, no concern. Just stating a fact. "That means I must claim responsibility for her."

"Responsibility? Is that what she is to you?"

She caught a hint of steel in his eyes. "She's my blood. Not yours."

Jada snorted and crossed her arms beneath her breasts. "I've only raised her from the time she was born. What do I matter?" She didn't know where this strength was coming from. She only knew she had it, and she had to use it. There was no one standing behind her. No one on her side. No one but herself.

"I didn't know about her," he said.

"Because her mother thought you were dead. And why did she think that? Did you tell her you were going off on some secret mission? That's the sort of thing a man like you might say to get a woman into bed."

"If I told her that, it was true," he said. She blinked. "If? You don't remember?" He shrugged. "Not specifically."

And then her brain caught up with the rest of his claim. "And you were on a mission of some kind?"

"How old is the child?"

Jada blinked. "You don't know?"

"I know nothing about this," he said. "I got a phone call while I was in Brussels, telling me that if I didn't come and claim a child I didn't know I had by a certain date, I would lose my rights to her forever. Then I went and got testing done to confirm that I am in fact the father, and I am, just so you know. Then yesterday I got a letter saying my parental rights would be terminated and she would be adopted to someone else if I failed to come to a hearing that had been moved to today."

"She's one. She just had her birthday." Just the two of them in Jada's little house, on the same street where she'd lived for eight years. "Where were you a little over a year and a half ago?"

His mouth twitched. "Near here. I was in Portland seeing to some business."

She put her hands on her hips. "Ah. Business."

"I can't talk about the exact nature of it."

Disgust filled her. He was the sort of man she'd been blessed never to have had any interaction with. She'd married too young and her husband had been completely decent. She didn't think men like this, men who bed-hopped with zero discrimination, were real outside of terrible movies. "I can guess. I've been caring for the results of that business.'''

One brow shot upward. "Just an added bonus to my trip. I'm not a sex tourist."

Jada blinked, heat rushing into her cheeks. "You are direct, aren't you?"

"And you are prickly. And extremely judgmental."

And not accustomed to people who were so comfortable talking about their bad behavior. He seemed to wear it like a badge of honor. "You're here to take my child from me—what reaction did you want me to have to you?"

He looked at their surroundings. They were the only two people in the antechamber. "I didn't anticipate being stuck in the lobby with you, I have to say."

"And yet you are. Answer me this…what does a man who travels the world, doing Lord knows what, want with a baby? Do you have a wife?" She hoped not, all things considered.

"No."

"Other children?"

"Not as far as I know," he said, a smile that could only be described as naughty curving his lips. "Clearly these things can surprise you."

"Not most people, Mr. Vasin," she bit out. "So, why do you want her?"

It was a good question. One Alik didn't know the answer to. All he knew was that if he turned and walked away, if he never met her, never made sure she was cared for, if he left her to fight her way through life as he'd had to do, then there would officially be no hell hot enough for him.

Forgetting about the phone call had crossed his mind. Not making it to the hearing had crossed his mind. But with each thought had come a twinge in his chest, a brand on a conscience he hadn't known he'd possessed.

He didn't particularly want her. But no matter what, he found he couldn't leave, either.

He gave the only answer he had. "Because she is mine."

"Hardly a good reason."

"Why do you want her so badly, Ms. Patel?" he asked, returning her formality. "She is not your child, no matter how you feel."

"Is that so? Blood relation, even to a stranger, is more important than the care that's been given? Is that how you see it?"

Alik looked down at the woman in front of him, all fire and passion. Beautiful, and if it was any other situation, his thoughts might have turned to seduction. Black, glossy hair, golden skin and honey-colored eyes, combined with a petite and perfect figure, made her a very tempting package.

Though, at the moment she was also a dangerous one. She was tiny, barely reaching the middle of his chest and yet she did not fear him. She seemed ready to physically attack him if need be.

Not in the way he would like, he imagined.

"It is not an emotional matter," he said. "It is black-and-white in my eyes. I am her father. You are not her mother."

She drew back, a cobra preparing to strike. "How dare you?"

"Mr. Vasin? Ms. Patel?" A small woman in a black jacket and slacks opened the door and poked her head out. "We're ready for you both."

As Mr. Vasin is here and clearly of sound mind, and, having submitted to a paternity test, has proven to be the father, we have no reason not to release his child into his custody.

Jada replayed the last ten minutes of the hearing in her mind, over and over again. T...

Awful!!!
By KDGC
This book didn't just strain the bounds of credulity, it shattered them. The reviewer who said this book was "a little outside of reality" was being extremely kind because nowhere in the smallest germ of reality would a cold, unfeeling, amoral, billionaire as Alik was portrayed deal with Jada as he did. If in fact someone of his character would have ever acknowledged the child as his (we were told he'd never been especially fond of children and he couldn't even remember the child's mother)he would have hired a nanny and anyone else he needed to care for the child. He most certainly would never have decided to marry Jada within hours if not minutes of their acquaintance, and Jada's unlikable personality made the scenario even more implausible.
We were supposed to have believed that Jada was a loving mother to the child she was adopting, but a loving mother would have done anything within her power to keep her child close and would have considered it a blessing to have been asked to be the child's nanny, especially since the court had awarded sole custody of Leena to the biological father who planned to take Leena to another country to live. Jada however rejected the offer and walked away betting that Alik would come after her which of course he did. Are you kidding me?!!! This book was just so crazy unbelievable that it should have been rejected by the publisher.

Romance with Sizzle!
By Harlequin Junkie Blog
In Heir to a Dark Inheritance by Maisey Yates Alik Vasin is "broken beyond repair". There is no room in his life for emotion, there never has been. As a youngster on the streets of Russia, he did what he had to do to survive.

When Alik finds out he has a 1 year old daughter he knew nothing about, who is about to be adopted, he stops what he is doing and goes to claim his daughter, Leena. Widowed Jada has had Leena with her from the moment she was born. As far as she is concerned, the adoption process is just a legal formality. Jada is devastated at the thought of losing Leena, even if it is to her father. For Alik, there is nothing else he can do except the right thing by claiming his daughter. For Jada it is yet another heartbreaking loss she is going to have to deal with when the court rules that there is no reason that Alik should not have custody of his daughter.

Alik is a very rich, very powerful businessman who has risen up from nothing. He hails from many places, but it is Attar he considers more home than anywhere else. It is where Jada must go when, to remain Leena's mother, she agrees to marry Alik...a marriage of convenience only of course, so that Jada can truly be Leena's mother. There can be no place for a sexual relationship in this marriage! Alik has trained himself over the years to feel no emotion, for him sex is only a release for his body. For Jada though, to have sex there has to be love and a relationship. Despite this, there is something about Alik that pulls at Jada...

"He was scarred, rough. Dangerous. And in that danger there was a magnetism that defied logic. That was unlike anything she'd ever experienced. Ever."

The heat between Alik and Jada is burning hotter each day, much to Jada's dismay. Part of her feels guilty for wanting him, another part pushes him away. "He was tugging away a mask she hadn't realized she'd had. A mask kept so easily in place by her desire to please, first her parents and then her husband." Even as the feelings grow stronger for both Alik and Jada, she denies them and insists that there can be nothing but Leena between them. For the first time in his life, Alik finds himself feeling...and he is not afraid to admit to his feelings.

With Jada pushing Alik away and Alik feeling more and more for Jada is there a common ground they can reach? Or will Jada push Alik away one too many times? Both will need to really open up their hearts and minds if there is to be a future between them as a real family.

Maisey gives us some interesting characters in Heir to a Dark Inheritance! Despite Alik's matter of fact, emotionless approach to his life, I really liked him. I liked that he told things like they were, he didn't play games. There is no room in his life for that. Even when he starts to acknowledge his growing feelings, he deals with them in the best way he knows how. He is also surprisingly insightful for someone who thinks he has no feelings. My heartstrings were pulled too, thinking of him as a young boy.

I could not like Jada! She did kind of grow on me, but wasn't a character I enjoyed spending time with! All of her self worth is tied to others, she doesn't seem to be able to value herself as she is. She could only find happiness from feeling valued and needed by others and this drove me insane! She is stuck in the past, fears moving on. While I can understand her feelings, she took them to the extreme...not wanting to give anything else a chance that might be different than her way of being up to now.

Heir to a Dark Inheritance is the second book of this series, but can be read as a stand alone. I do wonder about cultural challenges Jada must have faced, and how she could just completely uproot her life to run off to Attar to marry Alik. There is no mention of friends, and little mention of what happened to her parents or if there is other family.

This is a fairly fast paced romance. Heir to a Dark Inheritance flowed smoothly off the pages...I did enjoy reading it even if I did have issues with Jada! I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a romance that's a little outside of reality with lots sizzle!

Quick sexy read that will tug at your heart
By Mary Dieterich
This book had me crying in chapter one, but rooting for the hero and heroine to find a way to make their situation work. Cold-hearted Alik was not going to let a child of his grow up without a father, since he knew what being an orphan was like. Jada wanted to adopt the little girl to help fill the void in her life left by the death of her husband. She had raised the child from birth and was moments away from being given the adoption when Alik shows up.

After seeing that he just can't rip the little girl away from the only mother she's ever known, Alik proposes an unusual solution. Have a marriage of convenience that protects everyone's rights. What he doesn't count on is that it does nothing to protect their hearts!

Quick read with smokin' sex and a story that will tug at your heart.

Highly Original Erotica!
By Good Girls Write Smut
Wow, this is a seriously erotic story about a loving and happily married couple and the adventures they get up to in the bedroom on their `Special Saturdays'! I have read a lot of BDSM and so I was expecting the same old, but this was far beyond other stories from that genre that are being written at the moment, and quite a nice surprise. It is definitely a unique and highly engaging story, with the premise of the wife's love of spanking being taken to a new and highly original level. There was a great amount of character building that made the heroine very realistic. I would be very happy to read more by this original author.

Wow talk about dirty and nasty deeds in bed. This is quite a book to read especially for couples looking to get their sexual relationship up a notch. But I must admit not everything I read here can be applied in real life with my partner. But nonetheless the story is very intriguing.

Healthy lifestyle
By mrswizzard
This book is not only about weight loss but just a healthy life style. I think this book would benefit more than just those who need to lose weight. With so many health issues being related to gut and digestion disorders, this could help a number of issues. It is the best book I've found that explains WHAT you need to do and WHY, and then gives a detailed and doable plan for HOW.

A Cowboy Who Cares

Former marine Carson Lundgren's Wyoming ranch is a place where families of fallen war heroes can find joy and healing. The wounded vet is eager to give back, while rebuilding his own life. The last thing he expected is to fall for his first guest and her young son.

Widow Tracy Baretta and six-year-old Johnny have been struggling since losing their husband and father. When they meet Carson, his strength, patience and generosity—along with how great he looks on a horse—leads little Johnny to call him "king of the cowboys." They've fallen in love with the place…and maybe with the man himself.

But is Tracy just looking for a surrogate father? Or could this incredible cowboy really be the one who'll make her and her son believe in love again?

MARCH 1 Pulmonary Unit

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Bethesda, Maryland

Carson Lundgren was sitting in the hospital ward's common room watching the final moments of the NASCAR race when he heard a disturbance. Annoyed, he turned his head to see Dr. Rimer passing out a document to the eight vets assembled. What in blazes was going on?

"Ray? You're closest to the TV. Would you mind shutting it off?"

Ray nodded and put an end to one of the few distractions the men looked forward to.

"Thank you. You'll all be going home tomorrow, so I urge you gentlemen to read this and take what you can from it to heart. It's a good letter written by a former serviceman. I like a lot of things it says. While you're doing that, I'll go find our special guest and bring him in."

Special guest?

The guys eyed each other with resignation. Who knew how long this would take? They were all anxious to watch the end of the race. Carson looked down to scan the page.

Consider how different and difficult it is to go from a life of service, where every day has a mission, and someone depends on you to make life-and-death decisions, to a life with civilians who are making decisions about what client to call back first or what is the best outfit to wear to work.

Life would be different, all right. In Carson's case he didn't need to worry about choosing the proper clothes. He was going back to his Wyoming ranch, where a shirt and jeans had been his uniform before he'd signed up for the Marines. It would be his uniform again, now that he was out of the service.

In the beginning it feels as if you are so much more experienced than the people around you, and in a lot of ways you are. But that kind of thinking will only further alienate you from others. Practicing humility is the best possible advice I can give to help with reintegration into civilian life.

Carson did feel more "experienced." He'd seen things in the war that he could never explain to people who hadn't gone through the same thing.

Veterans need to recognize that even a short tour in a combat zone can have an effect on them.

While it takes everyone some time to recover after coming home, those who have seen, or been directly affected by a traumatic or horrific event (using your own definition or a generally accepted definition of such an event), need to be able to reconcile that it may have an impact on their lives and relationships with others after the deployment is over.

Since Carson had no family and his grandfather was dead, he didn't need to worry about that.

Seeking help is not a sign of weakness, no more than asking your buddy to cover your backside. The body may heal from scars and wounds readily, but the scars and wounds of trauma can last much longer and are more difficult to heal.

Difficult? A caustic laugh escaped from him. The cough he'd developed in Afghanistan would never go away, and no one could convince him otherwise.

I promise that, in time, you will see that your civilian counterparts are skilled and have a perspective that you may not have ever considered. And through a respect for what they do and what they have done, you will learn that you, too, are valued and respected.

Carson had always respected the ranch staff and knew he could count on their support.

Just as you are on edge in the beginning, they too may be a little unsure of how to treat you and how to act around you.

They'd treat him just the same as always.

So, take the first step. Be patient, be kind and be humble, and you will see that the transition is much easier.

"Gentlemen?" Dr. Rimer came back in the room where most of them were coughing because of the same affliction. He was followed by a five-star general decked out in full-dress uniform. Carson glanced at his buddies, Ross and Buck, wondering what was going on.

"I'm pleased and honored to introduce General Al-dous Cook. He's anxious to talk to you men recovering in the unit. He's been asked to do some investigating for the Senate committee examining the troubling findings of the Millennium Cohort Study of2009."

The eight of them got to their feet and saluted him before shaking his hand.

The General smiled. "Be seated, gentlemen. I'm honored to be in your presence and want to thank you for your invaluable service to our country." He cleared his throat. "I understand you're all going home tomorrow and have a great deal on your minds so I'll make this quick.

"As you're well aware, a significant number of returning American veterans like yourselves have reported respiratory problems that started during deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. The study of 2009 revealed that fourteen percent of the deployed troops reported new breathing problems, compared with ten percent among those who hadn't deployed.

"Though the percentage difference seems small when extrapolated for the two million troops who've been deployed since 2001, the survey suggested that at least 80,000 additional soldiers have developed post-deployment breathing problems.

"There's a fierce debate under way over just how long-lasting and severe these problems really are. We're tracking the numbers accrued among the troops based in Southern Afghanistan since 2009, particularly the Marines.

"After ruling out other factors, it's apparent that the powerful dust storms, plus the fine dust from metals, toxins and burn pits used to incinerate garbage at military bases, are the potential culprits. Steps need to be taken to reduce the hazards, and I'm concerned that this exposure isn't getting the serious review it needs.

"Dr. Rimer has indicated you've all improved since you've been here, but we'll continue to track your progress. He assures me that with time, most of you will overcome your coughing and shortness of breath."

Tell us another fairy tale, General.

"My concern is that every one of you receives the post-deployment care you need for as long as you need it. I'm fighting for you in the congressional hearings."

Along with the others, Carson stood up and applauded. At least the General had bothered to come to the hospital in person and make an attempt to get at the root of the problem. Carson admired him for that. The General chatted with each of them for a few minutes, then left. With the end of the NASCAR race now missed, everyone left the lounge except Carson and his two roommates, Ross and Buck.

They hadn't known each other until six weeks ago, when the three of them had been flown here from their various divisions and diagnosed with acute dyspnea. But even if they were hacking, coughing and wheezing, at least they'd arrived at the hospital on their own two feet. It tore them up that some of their buddies—especially those who'd been married with families—hadn't made it through the war.

The behavioral psychologist who'd been working with them suggested that, once they were discharged, they should find a positive way to work through their survivor's guilt.

In addition to the guilt Carson already struggled with for personal reasons, he was barely functioning. During the long hours of the night when they couldn't sleep, they'd talked about the wives and children who'd lost husbands and fathers from their own squads. If the three of them could think of a way to help those families, maybe they could forgive themselves for coming home alive.

At one point in their nocturnal discussions, Carson threw out an idea that began to percolate and gain ground. "What if we invited the fatherless kids to my ranch for a summer vacation? The ranch has lots of outdoor activities for kids who may not have spent much time out-of-doors. We could take them fishing and camping, not to mention horseback riding and hiking."

Ross sat up in his bed. "All of those are good confidence builders. Heaven knows those children will have lost some confidence. How many kids are you talking about?"

"I don't know."

"Do you have enough room for guests?"

"No. We'd have to live in the ranch house, so that wouldn't work. We'd have to put up some cabins."

"I could build them with your help," Buck offered. "Construction is what I was raised to do."

"I'm afraid I don't have much money."

Buck said, "I have a little I've put away."

"I have some, too," Ross chimed in. "Looking down the road, we'd have to hire and pay a cook and provide maid service."

Encouraged, Carson said, "No matter what, we'll have to start out small."

"Their moms will have to bring them."

"You're right, Buck. How long should they come for?"

"This is a bit of an experiment, so how about we try a week with one family and see how it goes?"

"For working mothers, I think a week sounds about right," Ross theorized. "One thing we can do is help the kids if they need to talk about death, since we've been through a lot of grief counseling ourselves."

"Good point. That's one thing we know how to do. What ages are we talking about?"

"I'm thinking about my nieces and nephews," Buck murmured. "How about little guys who are really missing their dads? Like six on up to maybe ten."

Carson nodded. "That sounds about right. They'd be school age. Younger than six might be too young."

"Agreed," they all concurred.

Before long, enthusiasm for the project they envisioned wouldn't let them alone. They soon found themselves plotting to turn Carson's ranch into a dude ranch where tourists could come along with the families of fatherless children. They would establish a fund to take care of the costs. If their pilot program went well through the summer, they'd talk about keeping it open year-round.

Their plan was a good one and sounded feasible, except for one thing. None of them had gone home yet. Anything could happen when Buck and Ross were reunited with their families. Their parents had dreams for them when their beloved sons returned to their former lives. For that reason, Carson wasn't holding his breath—what little he had at the moment. He had to admit the inhalers were helping. When he'd first been brought in, he'd been gasping for every breath and thought each was his last.

Of the three men, Carson was the only one who didn't have living family. The grandfather who'd raised him had passed away five months ago of a surprise heart attack, leaving the ranch and its problems to him. Not even his grandfather's doctor had seen it coming. Carson had flown home on emergency family leave to bury him.

In that regard, he wouldn't have to run their brainchild past the older man he'd abandoned when he'd entered the military. At the time he hadn't seen it as abandonment. They'd corresponded and phoned whenever possible, but in the end Carson wasn't there for his grandfather when the chips were down. Now it was too late to make it up to the man he'd loved.

"Tomorrow's the big day, guys." Once they were all discharged from the hospital in the morning, he knew anything could happen to change his friends' focus.

Buck nodded. "I'll join you before the week is out."

Maybe. But knowing Buck was the oldest son in a large, close-knit family who wanted and needed him back in the construction business, maybe not. "Give me a call and I'll pick you up at the airport. What about you, Ross?"

"Three days at the most."

"You think?"

He eyed him narrowly. "I know."

Put like that, Carson could believe him, but his family who'd made their mark in oil for generations would have its way of pressuring the favorite son who'd made it home from the war. His politician father had long laid hopes for him set in stone. Time would tell if their master plan would get off the ground.

"I can hear the carts arriving with our dinner. Let's get back to the room and eat before our final session with the shrink."

It couldn't come soon enough for any of them. The war had been their world for a long time. Tomorrow they'd leave it forever. But fear clutched him in the gut that it would never leave them.

MAY 2

Sandusky, Ohio

At three o'clock, Tracy Baretta left her office to pick up Johnny from elementary school. When she joined the line of cars waiting for the kids to come out, she hoped she'd see Clara Brewster. Her son, Nate, was a cute boy who'd invited Johnny to his birthday party last month. Johnny hadn't wanted to go, but Tracy had made him.

Maybe Nate would like to come home with her and Johnny to play, but she didn't see him or his mom. Her disappointment changed to a dull pain when she had to wait until all the kids had been picked up before her skinny, dark-haired first grader exited the school doors alone.

He purposely hung back from the others. His behavior had her worried sick. She'd been setting up some playdates with a few of the other boys in his first-grade class, but they hadn't worked out well.

Johnny preferred to be alone and stay home with her after school. He'd become a very quiet child since Tony's death and was way too attached to her. The psychologist told her to keep finding ways to get him to interact with other kids and not take no for an answer, but she wasn't gaining ground.

He got in the rear seat with his backpack and strapped himself in. She looked over her shoulder at him. "How was school today, honey?"

"We had a substitute."

"Was she fun?"

"It was a man. I didn't like him."

She eyed him in the rearview mirror. "Why do you say that?"

"He made me sit with Danny."

"Isn't he a nice boy?"

"He calls me squirt."

His tear-filled voice brought out every savage maternal instinct to protect him. Praying for inspiration she said, "Do you want to know something?"

"What?"

"Your father was one of the shortest kids in his class when he was your age. By high school he was five feet ten." The perfect size for Tracy. "That'll happen to you, too. Do you think your father was a squirt?"

"No," he muttered.

"Then forget what Danny said. When we go to Grandma's house, she'll show you lots of pictures to make you feel better."

Of course Johnny couldn't forget. Silence filled the car for the rest of the drive home to their small rental house. She parked in front of the garage. While he scrambled out of the back, she retrieved the mail and they entered through the front door.

Once inside, he raced for the kitchen. "Wash your hands before you eat anything!" He was always hungry for sweets after school.

While her six-year-old grumbled and ran into the bathroom, Tracy went to the kitchen and poured him a glass of milk before she sorted through the mail, mostly ads and bills. Among the assortment she saw a handwritten envelope addressed to Mrs. Anthony Baretta. It had a Jackson, Wyoming, postmark.

She didn't know anyone in Wyoming. Her glance took in the return address. Lundgren's Teton Valley Dude Ranch was printed inside the logo of a mountain peak.

A dude ranch? She'd heard of them all her life, but she'd never been to one. Truth be told, she'd never traveled west of the Mississippi. Every trip had been to Florida, the East Coast, New York City, the Jersey Shore or Toronto. Tony had promised Johnny that when he got out of the service next year, they'd take a big driving trip west, all the way to Disneyland. Another pain shot through her.

Tender Romance
By NancyCinNC
The Wyoming Cowboy by Rebecca Winters is the first of three books in the the Daddy Dude Ranch Series. We are introduced to Carson Lundgren, Buck Summerhays and Ross Livingston three fellow Marines, all suffering from a strange lung illness after serving time in Afghanistan. They decide to go into business together, opening a Dude Ranch on property left to Carson by his Grandfather. They also want to give back by offering an all expense paid trip to families of fallen soldiers.

So first up is little six year old Johnny Baretta and his mother Tracy. Since losing his father in the war a year ago Johnny has closed himself off and has become a shell of the lively boy he once was. Tracy tries to bring her little boy out and doesn't let him totally close off, but nothing is bringing back the child he once was. When Carson's offer comes in the mail, she is surprised by Johnny's reaction. And before you know it they are on their way to Wyoming.

There is an instant attraction between Carson and Tracy. Carson had always considered himself a confirmed bachelor, that is until he laid eyes on Tracy. And for Tracy this is the first time she not only looked at another man since losing Tony, Tracy is no longer feeling the intense pain of her loss . The main characters were believable and well written. While this is a Romance book, The romance is kept to kissing only. But the rest of the story is so well written, so it is not really missed. The focus was also kept on Johnny equally. He was not pushed to the back pages.

Johnny starts coming alive for the first time since losing his father. I really liked the interaction between Carson and Johnny. And I loved the idea behind the story, giving back to soldiers families. This is a story about moving on and opening your heart to a new love, but never forgetting the ones you have lost. This was my first book by Rebecca Winters. I enjoyed her writing style. And I look forward to reading Beck and Ross's stories.

Home To Wyoming, Beck's story will be available in August of 2013

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A sweet and enchanting read!
By Harlequin Junkie Blog
In The Wyoming Cowboy by Rebecca Winters, former marine Carson Lundgren is back home on his Wyoming ranch, where he and two other former marines have created a dude ranch to honor the families of fallen war heroes and bring a little joy and healing in their time of pain.

Tracy Beretta has been struggling with her son Johnny since the death of her husband the year before. Johnny has become an introvert and rarely wants to go out or interact with others. So when she receives the invitation from Carson Lundgren she doesn't know if her son will be able to handle going there instead of going to spend all their vacation time with her ex-husbands family.

To Tracy's surprise, when she gives the option to Johnny and they go browse the dude ranch's website, he gets really excited after seeing all the pictures. She believes that he will not to stay once they arrive in Wyoming, but Carson wins over her son after giving him a picture that was taking in Afghanistan of Johnny's father with other marines.

Carson is surprised by the immediate attraction to Tony Beretta's widow. He knows that he asked them to be their first family to arrive in the dude ranch and was expecting a family in pain. But he did not expect the charming little boy and the gorgeous mother that landed from the plane.

The attraction is not one sided, Tracy also feels something for Carson, but she doesn't believe that she can go so far away from Tony's family, and the only relatives besides her that Johnny has.

Carson doesn't know that Tracy feels the same way that he feels, but with his lung problems, due to inhalation of many damaging stuff during the war, he knows that he will always be weak in certain ways. And the fact that he left his grandfather, the man that raised him, in order to go to war still preys in his mind making him feel selfish. He was not able to be with his grandfather when he died and he does not feel deserving of his inheritance or of love.

Johnny thrives under Carson's attention. Something that does not go unnoticed by Tracy. She knows that must be careful or when they go back home Johnny will not only be missing his father, but also go into deeper depression from missing Carson.

Tracy and Carson will have to learn that they are still deserving of love and that them being together will not affect others the way the think. They have the opportunity to be a family and be happy, if only they are willing to take the risk.

The Wyoming Cowboy by Rebecca Winters is a sweet and enchanting read that will leave you wanting more. I can't wait to see what happens with Carson's two friends while in the dude ranch.

Enchanting novel
By Rhonda
4 STARS

The Wyoming Cowboy was enchanting. The kids were so loveable. It was also a clean read.
Three soldiers who were in the Pulmonary Unit of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland got together and made a plan to help other families whose fathers never cane home.
They would start a dude ranch on Carson's ranch and invite one family at a time, pay all expenses and give the family good memories.

They felt a little guilty that they survived and can't serve out their time anymore.(The idea of them feeling guilty about not dying makes me feel so bad. They are heroes that are making a difference. Thank you whoever you are and wherever you serve!)

They decide to start small with one family at a time. Carson served in the same unit as Tracy Baretta husband. Tracy and her six year old son Johnny are the first family to come.
Carson met them at airport personally and gave Johnny a picture of his dad and unit for Johnny to have. Johnny had become quiet and sad after his dad died. Carson then took him to buy hat and cowboy boots like his.
Carson and his friends were not just inviting families but were trying to give them personal attention and good memories.

I really like the characters in this book. Johnny is so cute and got excited about the horses and other things he saw on the ranch. It was making a difference in his life.
Tracy was having a hard time being attracted to Carson and afraid when they left her son will be hurt again. Plus she was not looking for anyone after her husband died last year.

Carson and his two friends have bad cough that is improving since they got home but still had problems breathing. Could not be around smoke or fires without making it worse. Seeing how they still suffer made me realize that their are a lot of soldiers that have come home with this condition and others. I bet those living in my state during winter are suffering bad from the pollution and gunk.

I really want to come back and read the next two books in the series. At least I hope Carson's other partners will have a story too.

I was given this ebook to read and asked to give honest review by Netgalley.
