"It's really a simple storyline of what can go sadly wrong in families and how easy it is to believe the wrong story for years. The sadness of a destroyed childhood that leads to a destroyed adult but then that broken adult wonderfully learns to love and trust a woman for the first time, only to destroy that love through his childhood insecurities. After sampling several e-books lately, I finally have found one that is not only well written but the main character is complex and very well drawn. Andrew Jardine in The Sleeping Truth, fresh out of a relationship where his girlfriend was disloyal, heads for London and the life every young person finds exciting. Yet this question of trust and loyalty comes up again and again in different guises. Andrew finds himself acknowledging the complexity of different circumstances, the impact of his past on his present behaviour and how he can change himself so any new relationship can evolve into something long lasting and full of trust. A very good read.

Love: The Capacity To Place The Beloved Above All Else And To Trust Completely

I am not attracted to Romance Novels and I am a great fan of Mr. Irvine. He first published this novel under the title "Marrying Slovakia, ". That title threw me off. This is not a romance novel. It is a multi-level story with fully fleshed out main characters. The prime main character, Andrew Jardine, tells the story mostly in the first person. There is no doubt in my mind that we are learning who Andrew is and how, by solving mysteries and uncovering lies, finds some truths long unknown to him.

The story traces his growth from the time he experiences the ending of his relationship with his long term girlfriend and has moved to London to start a new life. He is given a raise to a higher position in the company he works for and within a month is making new friends, but because he is good looking, single, and the subject of much female attention, he soon becomes the subject of the companies' gossip machine. To complete the picture, he shares a flat with his best friend, Guy.

The setting is London, July 7, 2005, the date that terrorists set off bombs in a number of commuter trains. Guy's girlfriend, Sal, who Guy is greatly in love with, is in the car where a bomb was placed. She is badly injured and is in a coma.

Before this event, Andrew has seen Sal in an intimate sexual moment with a strange man. Andrew cannot decide if he should tell Guy and probably ruin two lives. While Andrew is trying to decide, Sal is clinging to life, and Andrew finds himself in the center of a complex tangle of friendships, misunderstandings, lies, mysteries and life changing decisions.

This novel is full of suspense, unexpected happenings, grief, joy, love, and watching a man mature through his missteps and sage advice from others.

Read it. You won't be disappointed.

Black and white?

I like especially the lesson in this book: Life is not black and white -- as the main character (Andrew) had perceived it should be. He learned to see shades of gray, having to accept his own shortcomings. Living a life based on misinformation and manipulated thinking, he had to break down his prejudices to be able to live freely, seeking forgiveness for similar crimes that he was so judgmental and unforgiving about.

His reconnection with his mother was very moving and established the breaking of his mental chains and emotional wars, moving him from childlike thinking to maturity, with the ability to finally have a meaningful and healthy relationship.

It goes without question that no matter what foundation we have been given, if we truly want to live freely and happily, without carrying someone else weight or having their thinking motivate our behaviour negatively, we must take total responsibility for ourselves -- mind, body and soul -- and seek to find solutions to rise above our negativity. If not, we will forever be going around that same mountain of problems, no matter what wrapping it comes in, instead of moving forward. In Andrew's case, every intimate relationship broke until he finally faced his demons and took responsibility and appropriate action for his thinking and behaviour.

About the Author
Harriet Beecher Stowe was an American author and abolitionist. Born in Litchfield, Connecticut, she was raised in a deeply religious family and educated in a seminary school run by her elder sister. In her adult life, Stowe married biblical scholar and abolitionist Calvin Ellis Stowe, who would later go on to work as Harriet s literary agent, and the two participated in the Underground Railroad by providing temporary refuge for escaped slaves travelling to the American North. Shortly before the outbreak of the American Civil War, Stowe published her most famous work, Uncle Tom s Cabin, a stark and sympathetic depiction of the desperate lives of African American slaves. The book went on to see unprecedented sales, and informed American and European attitudes towards abolition. In the years leading up to her death, suffering from dementia or Alzheimer s disease, Stowe is said to have begun re-writing Uncle Tom s Cabin, almost word-for-word, believing that she was writing the original manuscript once again. Stowe died in July 1, 1896 at the age of eighty-five.

Hall shares the building blocks that have formed the basis of her current thinking. She shares the answers she has found to more than thirty questions people have asked her. What happens when I die? How will it feel to die? Where do I go? Can I communicate with my loved one who has died? Do animals go to heaven?

Hall believes in God, a Divine Source, that is unconditional love. Everything in the Universe is energy and interconnected; energies that are alike are attracted to each other. We all go to heaven, to a loving and joyful non-physical realm, when we die. According to Hall, relationships with our loved ones are eternal: they do not end simply because someone dies.

The book includes personal stories of how Hall coped with her husband's death and her mother’s dementia. She writes about the importance of choosing one's thoughts and learning to appreciate the experiences our loved ones in heaven are having. The author presents a spiritual perspective on dementia, a new paradigm, and helps the reader understand the spiritual role dementia can play in someone’s life. She also provides practical tips on coping with the emotional challenges of the caregiver role.

Odysseys of Love is divided into five sections. The first section is titled, “A Re-introduction to Death” and explains the beliefs that form the foundation of the book. The second section has answers to questions people have asked the author about death. The third section offers a spiritual perspective on dementia. The fourth section builds a continued understanding of death and our eternal nature. It includes topics like preparing to die, forgiveness, suicide, lost expectations, and dealing with grief. The final section is called “Moving Forward” and demonstrates that there really is no conclusion to life.

“I have been struck,” Hall writes, “by how often the fear of death, and a misunderstanding of death, can impede one’s life. The lack of knowledge can bring devastating pain. Death is something we all encounter in our lives. Isn’t it logical we would try to understand it?”

Learning to make peace with death by thinking differently about it!

Death is the event about which the majority of human beings refuse to think at all until faced with the imminent and personal issue. People face death in many different ways; some bring to the adventure a feeling of self-pity, and are so occupied with what they have to leave behind.
I'm no different from them. I had so many questions on my mind like, What is death? How do we experience death? Does it hurt? How quickly does it happen? What about life after death; do we survive? If so, in what capacity? Do we meet loved ones who passed before, or do we lose all sense of personal identity and recognition? What is the after-life like?

I feel glad for having read this book. I found answers to several questions I had on my mind. It is filled with knowledge and spirituality. The writing style is so brilliant and easy to understand. The spiritual perspective on dementia was amazingly written. I finally realized that death is not an end!! Understood that Death is a return to Love...

Thought provoking and insightful

I loved this book mainly for its ability to make me look at death in an entirely different light. I've never been particularly afraid of death, but I've also never spent a lot of time thinking about it. It is an incredibly thought provoking piece that is also beautifully written, making it that much more enjoyable to read. I didn't necessarily finish it feeling like I'd completely resolved any issues I've had or that it answered all my questions, but I don't think that was its intention. To me, the book was simply a way to get you thinking about death in a totally different light, and that it would help you begin a journey to finding answers. This is part of what I loved, because it never tried to force any beliefs or make you resolve an issue in a short amount of time. I felt it did a wonderful job making me think more about life and death, and I would highly recommend it to anyone struggling with death or who is looking for some answers.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Odysseys of Love" and found it to not only be very well-written, but it also challenged a few of my prior beliefs and conceptions related to the topic of death (and, of course, what may come after) so overall I found the read to ultimately be very insightful and even enlightening in a sense. I can’t say that I agree with all of it, and I suppose that’s to be expected, but I still found the majority of the content to be written in a very thought-provoking manner and I respect the author for being able to express her thoughts with a solid foundation of logic and a clear sense of perspective.

“Odysseys of Love” is one of the few reads I have come across recently that I’m sure I will be thinking about long after finishing the book. I highly recommend it and I hope to see more in the future by author Graehme Hall.
