Excellent starting point for understanding both Jaguar and their XJ-S

A few years ago, I bought a late '80's XJ-S without understanding much about the car or about Jaguar but I wanted it because Ian Ogilvy drove one in his portrayal of The Saint and I thought the car was pretty. Jags are largely misunderstood by those who don't own them (and by many who do) and many of the design, engineering and usability choices seem odd and at odds with each other. The marque has had a tough history, producing both excellent examples of their cars and complete nightmares that should never have left the factory. The V12 engine alone is a thing that makes no sense in this car, and yet the car was designed around the it. The engine is fine thing but designed for racing not for daily driving and the cooling system that keeps it from destroying itself is barely adequate and prone to failure. The power and handling of the car is surprisingly well thought out but most of the cars were handicapped with a 3 speed automatic.
The more I got to know my XJ-S, the more I found myself wondering why anyone would make such a car and this book helped not only educate me on the car but help me understand it in the context of who/what/where Jaguar was, not only when they designed the car, but the history of the company leading up to it. If anything, this book deepened my appreciation and interest in all things Jaguar as well as in my own car.
There are a lot of details for each model year and where the book is excellent at including detail about the history of Jaguar that lead up to the XJ-S, I found it a bit too brief in some sections when it comes to detailing the various changes over the course of the model's run. It's a minor complaint and, I suppose, the reason why one buys more than one book by more than one author. Otherwise, very informative and enjoyable. Definitely recommended whether your interest in these cars is just a casual thing or if you're considering buying an XJ-S (or any other Jaguar, for that matter) for yourself.
