What it takes to be a leader

First this is a reprint of this book. The author passed away in 2004 and the publisher, David C. Cook, decided to release another copy. This book has very practical advice for all Christian leaders.

Helping others become better at their jobs and becoming better people are two main goals of any good leader. The author points to many examples both Biblical and personal. Using the examples from these people's lives the author shows ways to be an effective leader.

Worried you can't be a good leader? Following the advice in this book, you will learn to trust the Lord to be your guide. I liked how the author used the example of Moses to reiterate this principle. Unsure of himself, Moses had to trust God to teach him what was necessary to be the leader Israel needed.

Using examples from his own experience helped make this book a personal one. I thought his examples really showed the Lords handiwork and some of the benefits other leaders could have if they rely on the Lord as well. The questions at the end of the book are for a more in-depth study. Working through the questions within a group setting will glean the most benefit.

I gave this book 4/5 stars. I thought some of the writing was a little boring at times. I put the book down and came back to it after a few days. I found it did have some sound advice that would help any leader.

LEARNING TO LEAD WITH PURPOSE

A leader who will not learn is just a person with a title thus books such as "Be the Leader You Were Meant to Be" by Leroy Eims are important. By taking a close look at leadership both from personal experience and from a biblical perspective the author is able to share a wealth of information that will assist even the most established person in authority to become better at leading.
There is not much in terms of leadership that is not covered in this book which makes it an important book for new leaders, future leaders and leaders who are experiencing personal frustrations. "Be the Leader You Were Meant to Be" will assist the reader in making the necessary adjustments in his or her role as leader by sharing the ups and downs in the life of Moses, one of the bibles greatest leaders.
For me this book was a review of leadership lessons I have learned in the past as well as insight into areas in my life that needed adjusting, such as the chapter on "Resolving Conflicts". I think everyone who wants to go into leadership should pay very close attention to the first chapter "Who Is Fit To Lead". We all need to read and re-read the chapter ""Why Some Leaders Excel".
"Be The Leader You Were Meant to Be" is a great book to read as an individual. With the addition of a study guide this book is an excellent tool to use for leadership training. I recommend this book.

The climate of India was very bad for children, and as soon as possible they were sent away from it—generally to England and to school. She had seen other children go away, and had heard their fathers and mothers talk about the letters they received from them. She had known that she would be obliged to go also, and though sometimes her father’s stories of the voyage and the new country had attracted her, she had been troubled by the thought that he could not stay with her. “Couldn’t you go to that place with me, papa?” she had asked when she was five years old. “Couldn’t you go to school, too? I would help you with your lessons.” “But you will not have to stay for a very long time, little Sara,” he had always said. “You will go to a nice house where there will be a lot of little girls, and you will play together, and I will send you plenty of books, and you will grow so fast that it will seem scarcely a year before you are big enough and clever enough to come back and take care of papa.” She had liked to think of that. To keep the house for her father; to ride with him, and sit at the head of his table when he had dinner-parties; to talk to him and read his books—that would be what she would like most in the world, and if one must go away to “the place” in England to attain it, she must make up her mind to go. She did not care very much for other little girls, but if she had plenty of books she could console herself. She liked books more than anything else, and was, in fact, always inventing stories of beautiful things and telling them to herself. Sometimes she had told them to her father, and he had liked them as much as she did.

From his experiences, Andrews came to believe that the Viet Cong insurgents were successful, not because of force or terror, but because they understood better than the South Vietnamese or Americans the complex webs of cultural, social, and economic dynamics in the rural villages.

Robert Andrews was an Army Special Forces officer and counterinsurgency specialist during the Vietnam War. Later, he served in various positions at the Central Intelligence Agency. In 1980, he became Senator John Glenn's national security adviser. Following almost 20 years in the defense industries, he accepted a political appointment as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations. He was in the Pentagon on 9/11, and advised the Secretary of Defense on the subsequent deployment of special operations forces to Afghanistan. He remains a consultant to the US Special Operations Command.

The author obviously speaks from experience, is knowledgable and easily understood. This book should be required reading by our military leaders today, both officers and enlisted, to learn from the past rather than learn from experience. It's ironic that lessons from Vietnam are still valuable - but have our current military leaders studied or ignored them? Bob Andrews has the ability to write in a language understood by those in a combat unit who need to learn the lessons of the past and how it is relevant in todays warfare.

All the other reviewers lightly touched on it but never came right out with it, if they had I wouldn't have bought this book. I am extremely picky and read most reviews before buying a book. I want romance, I want a good story, I don't mind a bit of angst but this book had issues for me, which I will detail below under spoilers. I loved Sanctuary of Roses and it is in my favourites folder, where very few books make the cut. I don't remember much about A Whisper of Rosemary (Medieval Romance) (The Medieval Herb Garden Series).

This book follows the story of the sister of the H from A Sanctuary of Roses and she's been at court ever since her brother killed her late fiance. She is a favourite of the queen and the queen will never let her go to get married. The h knew the H when she was a young girl and sees him again when he comes to court to petition the King for a new wife. His late wife died 4 years prior to the beginning of this story. He wants a quiet, biddable wife and has actually ear-marked a woman he thinks will be perfect. The H is immediately attracted to the h even though he doesn't want to be but leaves court once the King fixes his eye on the h. Ultimately the H comes in to save the day when the h falls out of favour with the Queen because of the King's attention.

The h has a past and was previously intimate with her late fiance. When she comes to the attention of the King, she becomes his unwilling mistress for several weeks and at one stage thinks she is carrying his baby. It is at this point after the Queen attacks the h, that the H steps in to marry the h and to save the day. He is even willing to say the child is his if it became necessary. The H was disgusted with the h when he found out that she was the King's 'whore' as she became known at court but a few weeks later is quick to marry her. Their relationship hadn't developed to a point where I could believe in his love. Honestly this is a plot line that I wanted nothing at all to do with. The h and H end up consummating the marriage exactly a week after she stops sleeping with the King. The other fact is that H and h spend very little time together after they are married and are separated for about 4 months because of misunderstanding and circumstances. I am not a big fan of big misunderstandings and when this book had very little romance to redeem itself with, the misunderstandings pushed it into the unacceptable realm to me. Ugghh.

The only reason this book didn't get one star is because the editing is good and the author writes well.

A Lily on the Heath

Colleen combines a great twist of mystery, comedy, love, and history into this medieval period piece. I've read many of her period pieces, like this one, and it's a great comfort that she will create a masterpiece each time. The way she has readers fall in love with her characters, and has you rooting for each relationship that she brings into each book. With Lily on the Heath, I couldn't put the book down, because I wanted to see the love of Judith and Malcolm unfold and how their relationship defied most of the rules of the time. The same goes for his master at arms Sir Nevril and Judith's maid Tabatha. This book also gave quite a bit of history, and that is another aspect that is liked in Colleen's book. It was interesting to find out that she created a beautiful story using the history of King Henry II, and having readers guessing (or readers who are history buffs) which part of the said history did she use. I recommend this to anyone who wants something new to read, regardless of how much history knowledge you have. Colleen always delivers a great product that will have you coming back, craving for more.

An Enjoyable Medieval Romance

As a fan of romances and royal court intrigue, I thoroughly enjoyed A Lily on the Heath, which combined both effortlessly. This book is extremely well written, incorporating the historically accurate elements as well as the complicated relationships and power plays of medieval royal court while weaving a growing love story between Judith of Kentworth, a lady in waiting to Queen Eleanor, and Malcolm, Lord Warwick. The characters are all well developed, and Judith especially is a strong heroine yet makes decisions and behaves accordingly for a woman of the time period. I loved the way we witnessed the love between Judith and Mal grow, even before they were each aware of the strength of their attachment. While I would have loved to have spent more time reading about a developing relationship between Judith and Mal's daughter Violet, the historical details, the likeable and fun characters, and the plot made for a well-developed, satisfying story. Although part of the Medieval Herb Garden series with some recurring characters, you do not need to have read earlier installments to thoroughly enjoy A Lily on the Heath.

Great nuggets of wisdom on a daily basis!

If you've ever read anything by Stormie, you'll know before starting this book that you're in for a treat. If you haven't, then prepare to really be fed by what she's giving us here! The daily devotionals are between six-seven pages long, so they aren't necessarily "quick", but they're well worth the time you'll spend on them. As I've taken time to study this book each day, I've felt like the time spent on the readings really blessed me throughout the day, and I was easily able to go back to what I had read and see a way that it applied to my life.

In the introduction, the author tells that the book has 30 chapters, and each chapter gives a different way to pray. She writes that "if you grasp these 30 ways to pray for your life, you will be living a life of balance, purpose, freedom, wholeness, and true success. You will be living a praying life, a life dedicated to drawing close to God and communing with Him every day --a life that works." I think that's very true! After spending so long in this book, I don't even begin to believe that I have all the answers or have everything figured out. But I think that this book is a great one to read and review regularly, to see the ways that God will teach new things about prayer through different phases of your life.

Day 6 really stood out to me - Pray as Though Your Life Depends on It. After talking about King David and his struggles with prayers that seemed to be unanswered (something that is very clear as you read some of his prayers in the Psalms), she says "being mad at God for not answering your prayer is not a good way to live". She then goes on to say that "God wants you to have a life of freedom, wholeness, and true success, but none of that can happen if you are not praying". God can still work in our lives if we aren't praying, but when we aren't taking the time to communicate our needs to Him, we can't expect to see the ways that He's working. This is a good reminder for each of us, no matter where we're at on our walk with the Lord - He wants nothing more than to be in a relationship with us, the only thing we need to do is be open to sharing our lives and our hearts with Him.

Each chapter ends with a section called "Prayer Power", with a prayer that you can read or adapt for your own use. It also includes "Word Power", with specific verses that relate to the topic of the chapter. The devotional is really a great one, it makes you think and gives you nuggets of wisdom to chew on throughout the whole day. It's definitely worth picking up!

Great book -- very Inspirational -- Stormie Omartian is one of my favorite authors -- The prayer warrior another inspirational book -- as a matter of fact I have read most of her books -- they have all been so good -- a person cannot go wrong purchasing one of her books.
