A nice read

I read Six Tycoons on holiday and enjoyed it very much. Like most people I have heard the names Astor, Vanderbilt, Carnegie, Rockefeller, Ford and Kennedy before. However, I didn't know why most of them were famous or I only had a partial insight into their lives. So finding out the detail was fascinating. I especially liked the way that the 6 lives chosen by Wyn Derbyshire also give you an overview of the the flow of American economic history. Starting with fur and moving through railways, oil, cars and ending with financial wheeling and dealing. Wyn Derbyshire's writing is entertaining and he mixes fact and anecdote in a way that keeps the reader engrossed and page turning.

Packed full of interesting anecdotes and written in compelling prose, Wyn Derbyshire's 'Six Tycoons' is a joy to read, full of fascinating facts and engaging stories, from the founding of Astoria to Henry Ford's peace mission, from the Erie Railroad Wars to Rockefeller's consolidation of the oil industry. You won't find a better compilation of short biographies of these six titans of the business world. A real page turner, I found it difficult to put down and am already looking forward to the sequel.

It is fun to read about American and Global history

I knew about these Six Tycoons, but not much. This was a fascinating book to read. My wife heard me talk about it so much that she is now reading it. I plan on reading individual books on some of the six. After reading about Henry Ford in this book, I am now reading about Henry and his role (and others) in the birth of the auto industry. It is fun to read about American and Global history. Much better than staring at a smart phone all day.
