Bruce's book covers it.

Bruce Sullivan's book provides a clear understanding of his journey. It shows the "religion" of the Church of Christ denominations and how the Catholic doctrine stands up to these ideas. I myself used to be a member of the Church of Christ, involved with Bible study and things in the church. I also was quite opposed to the "Catholic Religion". I read Bruce's book and had a hard time objecting or finding proofs against his reasons for converting to the Catholic Church. I dare any protestant to read this, consider the ideas in it and not have your life changed. This book started my journey to the beauty of the Catholic Church.

It is always fascinating to read what prompted converts to make the move. What is a constant in these stories is the fact that they do not talk down their previous church community, rather they are grateful to it for bringing them to Christ.

The amazing deadly journey of the Jerle Shannara

My review of this series

Yet another mind blowing series by Terry Brooks! This series takes place in those familiar lands in the world he has created. He lets you know what has happened to your favorite old charactors in a historical like fashion throughout the book, with the charator The high Druid Walker Boh is the only to continue forth in this new adventure.

He tricks you into believeing it will be a lot like his others as far as charactor development but suprises you by going completely opposite of what you believe it to be going. There are parts that I found a little questionable like Anthrax, which I will nt give away, it's origins and the truth of the books of magic kind of struck a little close to cheesiness, but was well recovered in the final book when you learn that what you thought was the main plot of the series, was just a leading factor to the real plot!

This is an engrossing series and highly recommended! Once again I found myself attatched to the charactors, and smiling a lot and even getting a litte misty eyed at times. GO READ IT, AND LOVE IT! I can't wait till I have the next series in hand The high Druid of Shannara series.

Jones revisits the medieval England she portrayed in Fatal Crown (S. & S., 1991), but this time her characters are the familiar Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II. Duchess of Aquitaine in her own right, 15-year-old Eleanor longs for romance and shared power with her husband. Her disastrous marriage to the monkish Louis of France is dissolved for failure to produce an heir. Eleanor then marries Henry, Duke of Normandy, 11 years her junior but her equal in ambition and passion. Their early years are marked by a growing family and empire as Eleanor bears six children and Henry becomes Count of Anjou and King of England. A sequel is likely since Eleanor and Henry do not become the enemies of the title until their sons are grown. Jones focuses here on the personal relationship between Henry and Eleanor rather than the political events of the day, and her work is distinguished from James Goldman's classic A Lion in Winter (LJ 12/1/66) by its focus on Eleanor's early years. Recommended for general collections of historical fiction.

In her second novel of historical fiction, Jones (The Fatal Crown, 1990) continues her prurient tale of scandal and succession among medieval European royalty. This time, her subject is the torrid romance of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II of England. When Eleanor's mother and brother die suddenly in 1130, Eleanor becomes heir to the large and wealthy duchy of Aquitaine. Her father, William, never remarries, and at 15, Eleanor inherits his lands along with their rebellious vassals. She marries Prince Louis of France to protect herself and her beloved Aquitaine from greedy and ambitious lords, but the marriage is a disaster. Eleanor is, after all, a lusty daughter of Aquitaine, and Louis (later Saint Louis) was raised to be a monk. Eleanor is miserable in France, but it is only after she learns the pleasures of the flesh from her uncle, Raymond of Antioch, that she determines to leave Louis. Their marriage is annulled and Eleanor immediately marries Henry, Duke of Normandy, Count of Anjou, and soon-to-be King of England. Though her new marriage is again one of convenience, Eleanor finds something with Henry she never had with Louis--great sex. Their passion for each other is insatiable and Eleanor gives Henry heir after heir. They are both too willful not to clash often, however, and when Eleanor discovers the existence of Henry's longtime mistress, Bellebelle, she and Henry become estranged. Ultimately, Bellebelle gets herself to a nunnery and Eleanor triumphs, but at the same time realizes that she cannot allow herself to be dominated by Henry. The book ends as it began--with Eleanor returning to Aquitaine, the seat of her power and source of her strength. Even Jones's simplistic treatment cannot completely ruin one of history's finest love stories--a fact that elevates this book to a cut above the average dime-store romance. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. Entertaining tale of Eleanor and Henry

Before you start off reading this book, be aware that it is historical fiction. And that for all that Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the most famous high profile women of her time, very little isource documents remain and as such very little is actually known about her.

What is known about her is quite well represented in this book, but as is often the case, it has been done better elsewhere (Sharon Pennman's novels are far superior). However, if you are new to Eleanor and her turbulent love life, this is as good a place as any to start. It certainly presents her as fesity and compassionate, and indeed I like to think that this is an accurate representation.

However, the author delves into areas such as her relationship with her uncle that have never been proved by the most vigorous research as anything but gossip, and whereas this may make for an amusing chapter or two in the novel, I couldn't help but think that it lessened the reading of the story for me. It is hard to believe that she who was so aware of her status would be so foolish. Similarly this novel deals only with the time when her relationship with Henry is turbulent, but still loving. Fans of the time will know that things ended very, very differently.

That being said, it is an entertaining novel, with some good research into the mores and habits of the time. It paints both Eleanor and Henry sympathetically enough, but it could have been much, much better.

CHARACTERS TO FALL IN LOVE WITH!!

I am a British history buff! I read everything about the British Isles, history and fiction. I loved the Fatal Crown and after finishing it (nothing good lasts forever) I immediately began to read Beloved Enemy, which I also enjoyed to the max. I'm eagerly awaiting the third installment of the series and hoping there would be a fourth one (After all, the Plantagenets could fill many volumes). Please, Ellen Jones, WRITE, WRITE!!! I love your books!

Fatal Crown and Beloved Enemy bring to life people, times and places that we can normally only experience through dry facts.
Ellen's novels actually made those facts believable.
Fantastic writing and I have not given up hope on the third of them. I can't wait to read Ellen's spin on Eleanor and her sons running amok on Henry and or Thomas.

Americans have a long history of ambivalence about the role of alcohol in their society. This vacillation turned to mayhem in 1919, when the 18th Amendment to the Constitution (later repealed) introduced Prohibition, which banned the manufacture and sale of alcohol nationwide. Today in the United States, a person legally becomes an adult at the age of 18: he or she becomes a citizen who can vote, serve in the military, sign a contract, marry, buy a gun, or buy a pack of cigarettes, but who cannot buy a beer or a glass of wine. Out of this gloomy picture shines a bright light: Dwight Heath's eminently sensible, intelligent, and hopeful book, Drinking Occasions: Comparative Perspectives on Alcohol and Culture, in which he describes the variety and versatility of drinking in many other parts of the world. In contrast to the negative view of alcohol in the United States, the reader is treated to descriptions of relaxed and positive experiences of drinking.

We must keep in mind that any product can be misused, even water and oxygen. Some long-distance runners have collapsed and died from drinking too much water, and some physicians have unknowingly caused blindness in premature babies by pumping too much oxygen into their incubators. Heath's book gives us the opportunity to learn about the drinking experiences of cultures that enjoy the social and health benefits of alcohol while avoiding the pitfalls of misuse. Can Americans take some practical advice about drinking behavior from, for example, cultures across the Atlantic? I confess to having reservations about such a possibility, because the "virus" of Puritanism continues to infect the United States in many ways, especially in relation to pleasure.

Right now, the federal government is prescribing a "safe" formula for those who choose to drink: two drinks per day for a man and one drink per day for a woman. In some other cultures, Heath reports, it is customary during a meal to serve a different wine with each dish and then a liquor or brandy with dessert. He goes on to state that although a person "may consume six or more drinks in the course of a meal, it is rare that anyone shows any [untoward] effects from doing so." Moreover, people may "match specific beers with specific foods." Heath emphasizes that "expectation plays a major role in shaping the effects (or lack thereof) of ethanol on a person's awareness and behavior." In many parts of the world, "popular beliefs based on generations of experience and reinforced by folk proverbs hold that those who drink are more healthful and hardy than those who do not, and their offspring are also [healthful and hardy]." In addition, alcohol use is integrated with many other human activities and is not viewed as an isolated phenomenon.

Contrast that with advice given to the American people. Experts seem to have a license to extrapolate findings as cause, exaggerate the consequences of alcohol misuse, manipulate people with misleading statistics, and frighten women who are even thinking about becoming pregnant into refraining from imbibing alcohol. During an era when the Surgeon General and social scientists are telling Americans how to live by the use of correlation as cause, Heath warns us, "Don't confuse numbers with science, and don't interpret a lack of numbers as implying an absence of science."

After studying the use and abuse of alcohol for 47 years, I have concluded that personal and social responsibility, not the substance, is the issue. Alcohol should be viewed as an inert, inactive substance put in a bottle or can to be used for health and pleasure by reasonable people.

Absent from Heath's examination of alcohol is the complicated problem of the self-destructive impulses and behaviors we all have to a lesser or greater degree. As we read his carefully crafted book, we come to see that the use of alcohol reflects a society's circumstances, experiences, and values. There should be more emphasis on the person and the surroundings in which alcohol is consumed and less emphasis on alcohol itself. Drinking behavior varies widely -- socially, culturally, and personally. The journey through life consists not of simple yes-or-no decisions and good or bad choices but the assumption of personal responsibility for these choices and decisions. Heath unfolds the vagaries of the use of alcohol by exploring when, where, how, what, and why people drink or do not drink. Whether we like it or not, alcohol is woven into the fabric of our world.

The physical, psychological, and social benefits of alcohol are well established. Heath's book provides a well-documented glimpse into the use of alcohol in other cultures and reveals how the United States -- in purportedly trying to produce a good, by dictum and denial -- often ends up doing harm.
