Merton as modern as when first written
By Sallyanne McColgan
This is a timeless classic compendium of writings on spiritual direction and meditation. Merton takes form all traditions and helps the seeker to find God in nature and all aspects of life. It is accessable yet challenging. Although it can be used by those who see themselves as spiritual but not religious, this is a religious text with a definite point of view. God is. As we grow in this knowledge we grow into spiritual beings who are fully alive.

Well worth the time needed to read and reflect to fully engage in Merton's meditation direction.

a must read for any spiritual journey
By Martin G. Tobias
Thomas Merton is a must read for anyone on any kind of spiritual journey. While in this text he focuses on the Catholic practice and profession of spiritual direction of another. There is much to learn here for anyone interested in spirituality of any kind. I continue to learn from Merton with every read. This is no exception

"radiant truth" can be found in these pages
By Krester
For those who feel called to a more contemplative spirituality this book will explain the all important questions about what that means or does not mean. Merton takes a dim view of the silly reasons people may bring to Christian meditation and points to the truly holy purposes and results.

Relativamente bueno
By Dafne

Sex and the Sacred: Gay Identity and Spiritual Growth, by Daniel A Helminiak

A down-to-earth look at the spiritual power of sex

Sex and the Sacred examines the spiritual dimension of human sexuality in a way that is free of religious affiliation but still open to traditional religion and belief in God. Dr. Daniel Helminiak, author of the best-selling What the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality, looks at the relationship between sexuality and spirituality, first, from a humanistic perspective and, then, a more familiar Christian point of view. In particular, he encourages LGBTI people to reclaim their spiritual heritage without apology. This unique book emphasizes spiritual commitment as an essential facet of LGBTI/queer consciousness and addresses such burning themes as coming out, the importance of self-acceptance, gay marriage, gay bashing, and the ethics of gay sex.

Sex and the Sacred combines a psychological approach to spirituality with common sense and compassion, inspiring a break from moralistic religion and an understanding of what true spirituality means. The book applies this understanding to Christian topics such as the Bible, Fundamentalism, and the future of Christianity, and shows how coming out was an issue for Jesus, how homosexual experience relates to the Christian Trinity, and how Western Civilization became so sex-negative.

Sex and the Sacred presents in the end a radical vision of Christianity open to all people. Religious leaders of all denominations, educators, counselors, members of the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender community, non-religious spiritual seekers, and anyone interested in the relationship between spirituality and sexuality will find this book enlightening and uplifting.

Sex and the Sacred examines:

  • the spiritual drive that is built into human sexuality
  • the standard religious arguments against gay marriage
  • a sustained argument that Biblical Fundamentalism is not Christian
  • spiritual lessons from the AIDS epidemic
  • the right and wrong of sex—queer and otherwise
  • homosexuality in Catholic teaching and practice
  • sexual ethics without religion
  • a vision for a renewed Christianity within a global community

Review
"A SANE AND REASONABLE APPROACH TO SEXUALITY AND SPIRITUALITY--well worth the cost, if only for the commonsense chapter 'The Right and Wrong of Sex--Queer and Otherwise.' That's something everyone needs to hear!" -- Sister Jeannine Gramick, LS, Co-founder of New Ways Ministry; prolific author on gay spirituality, censured by the Vatican for her educational ministry

"A SANE AND REASONABLE APPROACH TO SEXUALITY AND SPIRITUALITY—well worth the cost." -- Sister Jeannine Gramick, LS, Co-founder of New Ways Ministry; prolific author on gay spirituality, censured by the Vatican for her educational ministry

"AN EXTRAORDINARY BOOK for which all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people should be grateful. I especially commend the chapter 'The Trinitarian Vocation of the Gay Community.' Danial Helminiak has expertise in many connected fields--theology, biblical scholarship, psychotherapy, spiritual direction--and brings his erudition, insight, and wisdom to bear on thorny issues facing the gay community. Whatever he touches he illuminates with prose that is easy to read and understand." -- Father John McNeill, Author of the groundbreaking book The Church and the Homosexual and numerous other books on gay spirituality; ousted from the Jesuits by the Vatican for his ministry to gay and lesbian Catholics

"AN EXTRAORDINARY BOOK for which all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people should be grateful." -- Father John McNeill, Author of the groundbreaking book The Church and the Homosexual and numerous other books on gay spirituality; ousted from the Jesuits by the Vatican for his ministry to gay and lesbian Catholics

"IN ENGAGING, EASY-TO-READ PROSE, Helminiak addresses the central work of spirituality today: to tease out the rich meaning behind religious myths and doctrines so that they make sense to us lesbians and gay men who have been so influential in creating religion yet are so victimized by it. As a theologian, Scripture scholar, psychologist, and gay spiritual apologist, Helminiak shows that spiritual commitment is not at all inimical to modern GLBT/queer consciousness. THE ESSAYS ON HEAVEN AS EVERLASTING ORGASM AND ON THE HOMOSEXUAL MODELING OF RELATIONS WITHIN THE BLESSED TRINITY ARE DELIGHTFULLY PROVOCATIVE AND DOWNRIGHT QUEERLY BRILLIANT." -- Toby Johnson, Author of Gay Perspective: Things Our Homosexuality Tells Us About the Nature of God and the Universe and numerous other books; Former Editor, White Crane: Journal of Gay Wisdom & Culture

"This book should serve as a beacon for lesbian, gay, bi, and trans people, whether religious or not, who have lost their spiritual way. . . . An illuminating study of the queer spiritual experience." -- Christian de la Huerta, Author of Coming Out Spiritually; Founder and President of Q-Spirit

About the Author
Helminiak holds Ph.D.'s in both psychology and theology. He was ordained a priest of the Roman Catholic Church in 1967 and is incardinated in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, PA.

Reclaiming and Proclaiming
By Scott D. Pomfret
Sex and The Sacred: Gay Identity and Spiritual Growth, by Daniel A. Helminiak (Binghamton: Harrington Park Press, 2006), 235pp.

Daniel Helminiak's project in his 2006 collection of previously published essays, Sex and the Sacred: Gay Identity and Spiritual Growth, is a naked act of reclamation. Helminiak, a Catholic priest, professor of psychology and longtime member of the gay Catholic group Dignity, sets his sights on terms like "spirituality", "Christianity", and "natural law," and wrests them from those who would use them to oppress gay people. He provides a cogent re-description of these and related terms in an effort to draw gays and lesbians back to the Eucharistic table. Helminiak's manner is gentle and affirming: he knows that he is preaching to a GLBT audience of the wounded, who regard religious concepts with wariness at best and an understandable outright hostility in many cases. Heroically, he barely acknowledge Sisyphusian nature of his project; he says one thing that brings GLBT spiritual beings close; religious authorities say something new and hurtful that drives them away all over again.
Because he starts from Ground Zero (literally: many of these essays invoke 9/11), some of Helminiak's statements and conclusions are so obvious as to be banal. But patience with these initial assertions pays off: they are building blocks to more ambitious arguments.
Helminiak begins by describing a concept of spirituality that is independent of religious institutions. He describes it as "a dimension to human experience . . . that pulls us out of ourselves and lets us know that we, our very selves, are caught up in something that is vast and marvelous." He posits that the homosexual experience is necessarily spiritual, because the coming out process is one of growth, integration, and self-transcendence. Authenticity is the highest God/good of his conception of spirituality; indeed, for him, authenticity precedes genuine religious experience. Helminiak then reclaims sexuality for spiritual beings, arguing that sexuality - GLBT or otherwise -- is a necessary component of spirituality and not its enemy, as many contemporary institutional religions - including the Catholic Church - seem to believe. For Helminiak, sexuality is also a means of expressing spirituality.
Having reclaimed the term "spirituality" for the non-religious or those with antipathy toward organized religion, Helminiak shifts gears: he argues that while spirituality does not require God or organized religion, there is nothing about spirituality that precludes organized religion -- and, specifically, Christianity. Helminiak then introduces us to Jesus as a model of coming out: drawing especially from the Gospel of Mark, Helminiak shows us a Jesus who did not know that he was God and did not have all the answers, yet spoke from authority - an authority rooted in faith. His take on this Jesus is not one-sided, however. He also acknowledges the difficulty some - particularly oppressed or abused women -- may have with the historical fact of Jesus's maleness.
Helminiak also introduces us to the mystery of the Trinity, but he reclaims that word "mystery" in a way that is liberating:
Most take `mystery' in a negative sense: something that cannot be understood - and they leave it at that. However, there is a more positive understanding of religious mystery: something so rich in meaning that its meaning can never be exhausted.
From here, Helminiak goes to his roots: Catholicism. He first notes that Catholic teaching, in theory, is relatively good for gays and lesbians. The Church does not regard homosexuality as a choice, nor is merely being homosexual considered sinful. Moreover, the Church condemns violence against GLBT people. But Helminiak rightly points out that this teaching has been largely perverted from a pastoral perspective that lives in the real world and recognizes the primacy of conscience to a rigid perspective that makes a fetish out of rules - especially rules involving sexual matters -- claimed to be so eternal they are divorced from history. Eloquent chapters dispatching rule-bound Catholic teaching and defending gay marriage follow. The format is perhaps too short for the full exposition the topics require, but I have never before read a clearer, or more concise, demolition of the position of the Catholic hierarchy as expounded by JPII and B16 and their progeny bishops.
In his final chapters, Helminiak takes on Fundamentalists who call themselves Christian. It's not a well-written chapter: repetitive assertion clouds logical argument and white-knuckle fury blurs Helminiak's more measured prose. But the conclusion is clear: Fundamentalism is incompatible with Christianity. This conclusion leads Helminiak to some of his finest observations. He writes, "It is not the what, but the how of the Bible that turns out to be most important - not what the Bible says, but how it arrives at what it says. " Scriptures are relevant for an ethics built on virtue, excellence, and character formation: "The scriptures teach us to be honest, loving and kind, and this unchanging lesson applies everywhere and always. However, if our intent is the modern preoccupation with ... ethics built on rules that would spell out in legal fashion every act that is to be performed or avoided ...the scriptural teaching becomes moot, for it is debated." What matters to Helminiak is a Biblical attitude: filled with wonder, questioning, dedication, honesty, personal integrity and a commitment to truth. This is why even Fundamentalists ought to admire the hard work of coming out, because it reflects these qualities, whether or not you think homosexuality is a bad thing.
Not everything in Sex and the Sacred works. Some statements consist of maddening assertions that do not follow from the logic of the preceding sentences and left me scratching my head: "Christian belief affirms perfect human integration as the heavenly destination of every human being." "Human integration" was certainly never a topic in any Sunday school class I attended. Moreover, there is considerable repetition here, which no doubt results from the fact that this book is a collection of previously printed material addressing a variety of audiences. Finally, I craved more stories and case studies. In the opening essay, Helminiak introduces Richard, the teen rent boy with keen interest in religion as well as an internalized sense of damnation, but we never hear from Richard again in the ensuing two hundred pages.
Nevertheless, this book's strengths far outweigh any weaknesses. In the closing essay, Helminiak asserts what is singular - and worth defending -- about (reclaimed) Christianity as opposed to other world religions: the inherent coincidence of the divine and the human. God became man in the person of Christ, but equally we Christians believe we can touch and merge with the divine through self-transcendent spirituality - prayer, work, and even more mundane occurrences. Invoking sexual imagery that has a (suppressed) tradition within the Christian church, Helminiak says "Heaven is a never-ending orgasm" - in the sense that orgasm brings us outside of ourselves, is transformative, and is the stuff of spiritual communion.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Mannheim (Anglistisches Seminar), course: New British Drama, language: English, abstract: It is widely accepted that memories reconstruct the past: We need individual memories in order to experience biographical continuity. Without the episodic (or autobiographical) memory, it would be impossible for us to link our individual past to ourselves. The strong connexion between memory and the past is a very prominent topic in contempo-rary British fiction and the significance of memory is discussed in many literary works. One of these works is Harold Pinter’s play Old Times.
Together with the plays Landscape and Silence and the sketch Night, these works have often been referred to as ‘memory plays’ because they „focus on the past”. In all these plays, Pinter extensively investigates the possibilities of recreating the past as well as the problematic function of memory.
[...]
Given the fact that even the author himself has difficulties to summarize his works, it is even more difficult for the viewer, especially as Pinter does not write “with an audience in mind” .
Though he is convinced “that what happens in (his) plays could happen anywhere, at any time, in any place, although the events may seem unfamiliar at first glance,” the action in Pinter’s plays is always ambiguous and the plot a framework of contradictions, multilayered statements and silences. So, what is Pinter writing about? He only gives us one clue: It is “not (about) the weasel under the cabinet.
This paper aims to answer the question above. In the following, I will look at the sketch Night first. Then I want to concentrate on the topic of memory in the plays Landscape and Silence. In the main part, I will discuss the significance of memory in Old Times. As we will see, Pinter demonstrates that memory operates on a variety of levels. In all plays, memory is unreliable and can be reshaped according to one’s present needs. It can be a means of comfort and security, as in Night. It can separate people by providing them with the possibility to live in the past and to avoid confrontation in the present, as in Landscape and Silence. In Old Times, the function of memory is clearly the most complex. Here, it is used as a weapon in a battle for positions in which impression man-agement rules the battlefield.

Sebastian Bennington was home.

He waited for a wave of nostalgic happiness to sweep over him as he turned off I-90 and headed toward his hometown—toward Valley Ridge, New York.

The wave never came.

No warm glow telling him that all was right in the world again because he was here. No feeling that he should never have left. No feeling that it was good that he was coming back.

No feeling at all. Nothing. Nada.

That pretty much summed up his emotions since he'd received his separation orders from the marines. Hearing that he was unfit for service hurt, but after that, it was as if everything froze and became a blank grayness.

He reached over and turned up the volume of the car's stereo, thinking maybe the music would inspire some feeling. "This is 93.9, The Wolf," a female DJ's voice announced. Sebastian flinched when his left hand tried to grip the wheel, as Lady Antebellum's plaintive song soon filled the car. Sebastian had always loved country music, and this song seemed nice enough, but it was new and evoked no particular emotion or memory.

Gray.

Sebastian had planned on driving immediately to his grandfather's diner once he arrived in town. He'd talked to Hank often on the phone, glossing over why he was delayed. He didn't share anything about the surgeries, or much at all about the injury. He'd simply said that he hurt his hand and was having trouble getting leave. He'd explain the discharge in person.

But instead of taking Park Street to the Valley Ridge Diner, where his grandfather would be this time of day, Sebastian went north toward the lake. Without thinking about it, he found himself standing at the edge of a rocky cliff, looking out over Lake Erie.

He breathed deeply and took comfort in the expanse of gray-blue water below.

When they were young, Sebastian and his best friends, Finn and Colton, came here often. There was a small path that led to the spit of rocky beach sandwiched between the lake and the cliff wall. His grandfather had hollered when he'd found out the boys had gone down there, but Sebastian only grinned as Hank lectured him about the dangers of that stretch of shore. Back then, he'd thought he was invincible. Back then, he'd thought that there was nothing he couldn't do if he tried. There was no cliff he couldn't scale, no situation he couldn't get out of.

Sebastian Bennington knew better than that now.

He knew that even if he wanted to climb down that cliff today, he probably couldn't.

He flexed his damned-near-useless left hand and winced at the sharp stab of pain. April in Western New York was still chilly, especially at the lakeshore. However, he wasn't wearing a jacket because he was particularly cold. He wore it because he was home and he'd be seeing his grandfather and friends soon. His jacket's pocket was a great place to disguise how damaged his hand was.

You should be thankful you're right-handed, a therapist had joked.

You should be thankful you're alive, his doctor had informed him.

Maybe he should be thankful to be alive, to be right-handed, to be back in Valley Ridge, New York.

But thankfulness was an emotion he couldn't manage.

Sebastian knew he should get back in his car and drive into town now. Instead, he continued to stand on the cliff's edge. He didn't ponder anything special. He didn't think any great thoughts. He just stared at the lake, his thoughts and emotions as f lat and monotone as the water.

"Sebastian Bennington?" a woman asked, pulling him from his indistinct mental foray.

Sebastian turned and saw a dark-haired woman he couldn't place. He searched her features, waiting for the click of recognition, but still nothing. Valley Ridge was filled with friends and acquaintances. It was a small enough town that even if he didn't know someone, they at least looked familiar. But the woman didn't.

A stranger.

She had to be because she had the kind of look that a man would never forget. She had on some kind of flowy skirt, with a blousy top and big, chunky jewelry around her neck and wrists. And she had on dangling earrings that brushed her shoulders. But it was her hair that got him. Dark brown on the border of being black. It was long—way longer than most women wore their hair—and hanging down her back in soft waves that hinted at curls.

"Sebastian?" she repeated, staring at him with very blue eyes. Those eyes were even more memorable than her hair.

He realized he'd been staring and nodded. "Yes? Do we know each other?"

"No, not exactly, although I know you in a way I've known very few people."

He must have looked puzzled because she laughed. The expression seemed at home on her face, as if that upturned curve of her lips and the crinkling of her eyes were their default positions.

"Sorry, how do you know me?"

She struck a pose similar to that statue his grandfather liked, The Thinker. Her hand was under her chin and she was serious for a split second, then smiled again, as if whatever thought she'd had was a pleasant one. "Well, I know that your grandfather served you brussels sprouts when you were young and you dropped them on the floor in hopes your dog would eat them for you. Problem was, Chance didn't like brussels sprouts, either. Of course, I've had Hank's brussels sprouts and there's really nothing to recommend the vegetable the way he prepares them. I mean, he's a good cook, but he's never really had to perfect vegetables at the diner, has he?" She punctuated each item with more laughter and he was sure he was right—this was a woman who laughed a lot.

"Who are you?" Sebastian asked.

This didn't invoke any laughter, but her smile lingered. The crinkling around her very blue eyes wasn't quite as pronounced, though it was still there. Laugh lines. He'd never understood why they were called that until this minute. They weren't a sign of aging, as he'd always imagined, at least, not on this woman. On her, they were a sign of a happy disposition.

He wished he could work his way up to feeling happy…to feeling something.

On the back of that thought came the awareness that if he mentioned those laugh lines, the woman wouldn't thank him for it. Not that he would mention it. He might not know a lot about the female gender, but he was pretty sure most women didn't want to hear they had lines of any type.

The woman extended her hand. There was a zing of awareness as they touched, and he realized it had been a long time since he'd been this attracted to a woman. And that little zing sent a ripple through the blandness he'd been living with for a long time.

"Sorry," she said as she shook his hand. "I'm Lily. Lily Paul. Hank's tenant and—"

He pulled his hand away, disregarding any attraction that he imagined he'd felt. He knew who this was, and he was absolutely not attracted to her. As a matter of fact, he felt an immediate surge of another emotion. Annoyance. Not that he'd thank her for that, either.

"You're her," he said.

"I am." She didn't seem to notice that he was less than thrilled to be meeting her, just as she didn't seem to notice he wouldn't appreciate a stranger calling him and reading him the riot act on how he treated his grandfather. Telling him he needed to get home. Telling him that Hank needed him.

"What are you doing out here?" he asked.

He knew he'd meet this Lily eventually, but he wouldn't have guessed that she'd be the first person he'd see upon his return to Valley Ridge.

"We're having Sophie's shower at the Nieses' cottage. I spotted you and figured I should come over and introduce myself."

"How?" he asked.

She looked confused now, although not unhappy. "How what?"

"How did you know some stranger on the cliffs was me—Hank's grandson?"

"Oh, that how. That's easy. Hank has a wall of your photos. I've seen you almost every day since I moved here. I'm especially fond of the one of you in your dress blues. Sophie says you're going to wear them for the wedding. I can't wait to see you in them in person."

He flinched as she mentioned the uniform he'd given up. He didn't want to wear it to the wedding, but he wasn't sure how to tell Colton that, so he was probably stuck, even though he'd feel like a fraud putting it on. She couldn't have known that she'd induced yet another feeling. Sebastian found himself wishing for the grayness that had been his norm.

The woman continued, "But I think I'd have recognized you even if I hadn't seen the pictures. Hank loves you and has missed you, so he's talked—"

The woman—Lily—was making Sebastian feel uncomfortable. He didn't like the thought of Hank sharing stories about him with a stranger. He didn't like that this woman was looking at him as if she could see to his very core.

All that time he'd been in the hospital, he'd dealt with a shrink regularly. He hadn't liked the man analyzing him. And he'd only shared the things he wanted to share. He had control over what information was disseminated. He wasn't convinced that it had helped any, but he had the situation in hand. With this woman, however, he didn't have control at all over what she knew about him or what things Hank had revealed.

"Speaking of Hank, I'm on my way to see him. I only stopped here—" Wait. He didn't owe this woman an explanation for being here.

When he abruptly became silent, she continued, "I'm so glad you're home. I need your help with Hank. He had a doctor's appointment scheduled the other day, but he skipped it. He claimed he forgot, but this time there was none of the confusion I mentioned over the phone. He doesn't want to hear a doctor's official diagnosis. I've rescheduled the appointment, but unfortunately, it's not for another three weeks and—"

"No." Sebastian didn't have to know this woman to know what she was talking about. She'd talked to him already. And she was wrong.

Hank had always been scatterbrained, but that didn't mean he had Alzheimer's or dementia like this woman claimed he did. Forgetting a few things only meant Hank was who Hank had always been, multiplied by a few more years. And right now, Sebastian found the thought of that comforting.

"If my grandfather, who is in his eighties, by the way, doesn't want to go to the doctor's, if he doesn't think he needs one, then that's that. You weren't asked to schedule appointments for him or make a diagnosis." He realized he was talking with his hands in motion, an old habit he was trying to break, and until lately, his left hand had been in so much pain he hadn't slipped. But maybe it was a sign he was getting better, or it was a sign this woman was annoying him more than anything, because he caught himself using his left hand.

And he saw that Lily had noticed it. She took a step backward. He didn't blame her. The hand was a mass of angry scars. The doctor said they'd fade in time and no one would pay attention to them, but that time hadn't come yet.

"But he does need to see a doctor," she insisted quietly. "When you're with him—"

"Ma'am, I want to be clear. I know that you're my grandfather's tenant, and I know he seems to like you." That was an understatement. When he talked to Hank, he was all Lily-this and Lily-that. "But Hank's a grown man. I won't make him do anything."

Hell, he'd spent the past few months feeling boxed in, forced into places and situations he didn't want to be in. Forced into surgeries. Forced into talking with shrinks and working with physical therapists. Now he'd been forced to separate from the marines. He'd been forced to leave the job he'd worked for, the career he loved. He'd been forced to watch his unit leave for battle without him.

No, he would never subject anyone else to that kind of treatment, especially not Hank.

He would never make Hank feel as frustrated as he'd felt.

Suddenly, it occurred to him that maybe he needed his homecoming to be without too much emotion or drama. Feeling numb was preferable to feeling as frustrated as he'd felt in the hospital.

And it was damned better than the frustration this wrinkly-eyed woman was making him feel now.

Yeah, Miss Laugh Lines here didn't seem to understand the term even keel. She'd gone from laughing and smiling to hair-pulling aggravation in the blink of an eye.

"But he needs—" she started again.

Sebastian interrupted her. "My grandfather is an adult. I'm sure he knows what he needs better than some nosy, pushy stranger who rents a room from him." That was all this Lily Paul was—a tenant. She hadn't even lived in Valley Ridge for a full year. She didn't know what she was talking about.

"It's more than that," she said softly. "Hank and I are business partners."

That stopped him. "Business partners?"

"I bought a share in the diner. The accounts were a mess, and that's part of the reason I suspect—"

Sebastian felt something else now, but this went beyond aggravation. "So you've not only moved into my grandfather's house, but now you're buying his diner. You're pushing your way into his business and messing with his books?"

"I didn't push anything. I bought a share. A small share. Hank was behind in paying suppliers and I offered him a loan, but he wouldn't borrow money from me. He couldn't pay the bills himself. I don't think you understand the situation." She stopped, met his stare with her blue eyes unblinking and crossed her arms over her chest, setting her baubles to clinking. "Don't look at me like that. This was his idea. So I—"

Sebastian shook his head. "You can be sure I'll be looking into that. I've heard about people who prey on the elderly."

"You were telling me that Hank's an adult and doesn't need looking out for. Now you're accusing me of taking advantage of his mental infirmity. You can't have it both ways, Seb."

Sebastian bristled at the childhood nickname. This woman didn't have any right to use it. "It's Sebastian. And Hank is an adult. I'll thank you to remember that. But I'm not some grasping person out to… Well, I have no clue what you're out to do. But I'm his grandson and I love him."

"Yeah? You couldn't prove it by me. He's been saying you were on your way home for weeks, and rather than go see him at the diner, you're here? Hank needs you."

Sebastian clenched his fist in his pocket. Truth was, his hand barely made a fist, and what little there was of it sent spasms shuddering down his lower arm that served as a reminder of so many things he didn't want to deal with. This woman was one of them.

Well, he couldn't escape his injury, but there was nothing to say he had to stand here and allow himself to be browbeaten by an utter stranger.

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go find my grandfather." He stalked away from this woman who looked like a gypsy, all wild and free, but sounded like a house-bound shrew.

He'd been waiting to feel some sense of homecoming—to feel any emotion—about coming back to Valley Ridge. And now he did. Annoyance and suspicion about this woman who'd wormed her way into his grandfather's home and business.

Well, he was here now, and he'd take care of things.

APRIL SHOWERS by Holly Jacobs
By Kindle Customer
Lilly Paul felt like she was home the minute she set foot in Valley Ridge, New York. She originally came to town as a nurse to help take care of her friend's dying sister but she decided to stay and start her own home care business. One of her first friends was Hank Bennington, the owner of the local diner and her landlord. She is distressed to see that Hank is beginning to show signs of dementia, maybe even Alzheimer's. Hank's grandson, Sebastian, is due home from military service soon; Lilly plans to make sure he takes Hank to the doctor. She didn't anticipate the attraction she feels for Seb nor his hostility toward her when she broaches the subject of Hank's illness.

Sebastian wanted to come home for his best friend's wedding but not like this. His military career is over and an injury causes mental as well as physical pain. So imagine his reaction when he is accosted by a pretty little thing who tells him something is wrong with his grandfather and that she has become Hank's business partner. The longer he is around Lilly however, the more he is sure that she is exactly the right person for him, if only he can convince her of that.

Award winning author Holly Jacobs delights us with her witty and compassionate writing in APRIL SHOWERS. Readers are immediately invested in the hero and heroine as they spar with each other, trying to discover if their love has a chance to thrive despite their trust issues. Set in the small town of Valley Ridge, APRIL SHOWERS is the second book in Holly Jacobs's new A Valley Ridge Wedding series. It is a stand alone book but do not deprive yourself by missing out on the other two books in the trilogy. What could be better; good friends, a close caring community and romance all in one great read?!

A beautiful love story
By Nancy Levine "Nancy"
Grrr...the computer ate my first review, so now I have to re-write it. That's okay, it's an honor to be the first to review this book.

I loved being back in the Valley Ridge, N.Y. setting again and seeing the characters from the first book. I loved Lily and Sebastian--they are complex, interesting characters and I enjoyed seeing them go from friends to lovers. And this book had me crying over some parts of it.

I understand how the town felt about Hank--I liked him a lot. I learned more about Alzheimer's that I didn't know, which is good, because I am going through this with my mom and I understand how Sebastian felt--that there was nothing he could do. I'm glad he found Lily to help him through.

I loved when Sebastian called Lily Webster and she talked about how much she loved words. I do, too. I've been hooked on the Merriam-Webster "Word of the Day" website since my a friend and co-worker (and brother from another mother) introduced me to this site when we worked together at a weekly newspaper.

My favorite scene in the book was Lily and Sebastian's first date--the picnic. I loved how Lily talked about the books she read when she was growing up and what she learned from each book. I can identify with that because my mom said when I was a kid, I'd come back from the library with stacks of books as big as I was. I can imagine what she'd say if she saw my TBR stack of e-books on my Kindle for PC app.

I also liked the part when Lily felt comfortable with the silence between her and Sebastian. I have friends (and my late husband) who understand that we don't have to talk constantly--sometimes the silence is better.

Really loved this book and am looking forward to Sophie and Colton's story--I wish that would have been the excerpt instead of the one that was there.

4.5 Star Review - Series: A Valley Ridge Wedding
By Harlequin Junkie Blog
In April Showers by Holly Jacobs, Lily Paul has finally found a place of her own in Valley Ridge, New York after years of searching for somewhere to belong. And some place that felt like home. Her nursing job brought her here temporarily to take care of a co-worker's sister who was struggling with cancer, but after making several close friends, Lily decided to stay in the small town. She befriended the local diner owner, Hank, and is now living in an efficiency apartment on his property and helping him out with the diner. He's become like a grandfather to her, the kind of guy she wished she had around when she was growing up. She had a tough childhood but has never been able to share the details with any of her friends. So instead she puts on a happy face every day in the hopes that it will keep her focused and upbeat.

"There was the world the way you wanted it, and the world the way it was. Sometimes, if you were really fortunate, the way you wanted it to be would match the way it was."

Hank has regaled her with stories of his grandson, Sebastian Bennington, since she arrived in Valley Ridge. Lily waits expectantly to meet him when he arrives for his childhood friend Colton's wedding. She wants to see if Sebastian lives up to the stories, but also needs to get his help in convincing Hank to see a doctor about the confusion and memory loss he's suffered lately. The man she meets when he arrives in town and the boy she was told about are two very different people. She definitely doesn't have an ally in him. She sees an angry man who is hurting both emotionally and physically. She remains positive and focuses on helping Hank, hoping Sebastian will come around once he sees the changes in his grandfather. She finds that she's able to help Sebastian begin to move past his limitations from his injury which helps his attitude improve as well. She gets to know him better once he's dealing with the pain, and feels more comfortable around him. He starts confiding in her about his accident and she's scared by how much she looks forward to seeing him everyday. She doesn't believe she'll ever find lasting love but can't deny her attraction to Sebastian.

"And when he leaned down to kiss her, there was no question in his mind that she was receptive, just as there was no question in his mind that he had never wanted anything as much as he wanted this moment."

Sebastian grew up in Valley Ridge with his grandfather Hank after his mom took off. Now he's back to attend his friend Colton's wedding and to figure out what to do next with his life. He was a Lieutenant in the Marines, serving in Afghanistan until a short while ago. However, an injury has now taken his career away. He figures once the wedding is done he'll take off and start a new chapter. Sebastian can't wait to see his grandfather and friends in town. He needs some normalcy and to see that some things never change, especially after his struggles during the past several months. He was not expecting to find Lily infiltrating every aspect of Hank's life and is furious with her. He thinks she is trying to take advantage of a caring, elderly man and is looking to take over his business and home. He directs his pent up anger and frustration at Lily who, much to his surprise, stands her ground. Her cheerfulness annoys him at first but he soon realizes she has faced adversity in her life as well and chooses to look on the positive side. As they become closer, he only wishes she will confide in him what happened in her past. Sebastian is amazed by all that Lily does for Hank and the rest of the town. He knows he is falling for her and that she isn't looking for anything long term, but he hopes maybe he can slowly change her mind.

Holly Jacobs has written another touching love story set in the beautiful town of Valley Ridge. I think Lily and Sebastian are kindred spirits. They both had troubling childhoods which they endured with as much strength as they could muster. And although they each deal with their personal struggles differently, they are ultimately hoping for the same thing: to find their place in the world and have it filled with the love of friends and family. This is a truly heartwarming tale filled with strong emotions and a sense of community. I enjoyed all of the secondary characters as well and look forward to reading book three: A Walk Down The Aisle, which is Sophie and Colton's story.

If you enjoy clean romance with a ending worthy of happy tears, I definitely recommend reading this book.

Westmoreland: The General Who Lost Vietnam, by Lewis Sorley

“Westmoreland is a great book, a classic by an author who knows his subject well and tells the story without hesitation.” — General Donn A. Starry, U.S. Army (ret.), Commander, Army Training and Doctrine Command (1977–1981)

Is it possible that the riddle of America’s military failure in Vietnam has a one-word, one-man answer?

Unless and until we understand General William Westmoreland, we will never understand what went wrong in Vietnam. An Eagle Scout at fifteen, First Captain of his West Point class, Westmoreland fought in two wars and became Superintendent at West Point. Then he was chosen to lead the war effort in Vietnam for four crucial years.

He proved a disaster. He could not think creatively about unconventional warfare, chose an unavailing strategy, stuck to it in the face of all opposition, and stood accused of fudging the results when it mattered most. In this definitive portrait, Lewis Sorley makes a plausible case that the war could have been won were it not for Westmoreland. The tragedy of William Westmoreland carries lessons not just for Vietnam, but for the future of American leadership.

Westmoreland is essential reading from a masterly historian.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with Author Lewis Sorley

Q: How can the loss of Vietnam be blamed on Westmoreland?

A: He served for four years as U.S. commander there during the crucial period of the buildup of American ground forces, a flood that eventually reached 543,400 due to Westmoreland’s repeated requests for more and more troops. Given a free hand in deciding how to conduct the war within South Vietnam, he chose to pursue an unavailing war of attrition, which failed miserably. Westmoreland thus squandered four years of support by Congress, much of the American people, and even the media.

Q: How did a man as limited as Westmoreland achieve such high rank and position?

A: Fueled by ambition, Westmoreland drove himself relentlessly. He was of impressive military mien, energetic, effective at self-promotion, and skillful in cultivating influential sponsors. From his earliest days of service he led his contemporaries, was admired and advanced by his seniors, and progressed rapidly upward. Westmoreland’s strengths eventually propelled him to a level beyond his understanding and abilities.

Q: What was Westmoreland’s approach as commander of U.S. forces in Vietnam?

A: Westmoreland decided to conduct a war of attrition in which the measure of merit would be body count, the number of enemy killed. His premise was that if he killed enough of their soldiers, the enemy would lose heart and cease its aggression against South Vietnam. He went about this primarily through the use of search and destroy tactics, often involving very large operations in the jungles near South Vietnam’s western borders with Laos and Cambodia.

Meanwhile he neglected other crucially important tasks, such as strengthening South Vietnam’s military forces and rooting out the covert infrastructure that enabled the enemy to use coercion and terror to dominate South Vietnam’s rural populace. He was successful in killing a large number of enemy troops, but this did not represent the progress he claimed; the communists simply replaced their losses and continued to fight. Westmoreland was on a treadmill.

Q: What are the sources for your account of Westmoreland’s life and career?

A: Westmoreland himself provided extensive—and revealing—archival material. His papers, on deposit at the University of South Carolina, run to many thousands of pages. I spent four months going through them.

I interviewed about 175 people who had known and served with Westmoreland over the years. One of the most important, and most helpful, was General Bruce Palmer Jr., with whom I spoke dozens of times. Having been Westmoreland’s West Point classmate, then having served under him in Vietnam and subsequently as his Vice Chief of Staff, General Palmer was an authoritative, sympathetic, and invaluable source of both factual information and sensitive insights.

Q: What do you hope will be the lasting impression of General Westmoreland?

A: It is not a happy story, but I believe it is an important, even essential, one. Unless and until we understand William Childs Westmoreland, we will never fully understand what happened to us in Vietnam, or why.

In the end, of course, this is the story of an officer whose strengths propelled him to a level of responsibility beyond his capacity. From early days prideful and image-conscious, Westmoreland developed into a man of incredible industry, driving himself to achieve, forever in a rush, with unbounded ambition and no apparent sense of personal limitations—doing it by the book, even though he hadn’t read the book or studied at any of the Army’s great schools. His ultimate failure would have earned him more sympathy, it seems certain, had he not personally been so fundamentally to blame by reason of his relentless self-promotion.

Those who have long been Westmoreland admirers and supporters may be offended by an account that, as they will view it, tarnishes his reputation. But many others, I believe, will welcome a factual, detailed, and well-documented explanation of how and why he failed so completely in his most important assignment; what that failure cost us as a nation; and, most important, what it cost the ill-fated South Vietnamese, who risked all and lost all.

Review

"This is a terrific book, lively and brisk, and surprisingly interesting. How could this deeply flawed, limited man rise so high in the U.S. Army? This will be the definitive book on Westmoreland, and a must read for anyone who tries to understand the Vietnam War."

-Thomas E. Ricks, author of Fiasco  and The Gamble

" Lewis Sorley's brilliant portrait of General Westmoreland helps us understand why our war lasted so long and ended as it did. This is biography at its finest."

- Bui Diem, South Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States (1967-1972)

"A riveting history of how ambition corrupted soldierly virtues and led to slyness, hubris and national disaster. A scorching indictment of how generals covered up for each other."

-Bing West, author of THE WRONG WAR: Grit, Strategy, and the Way Out of Afghanistan

"To understand the Vietnam War in its totality one must logically try to understand General Westmoreland. Dr. Lewis Sorley has made an enormous contribution by revealing General Westmoreland’s complex personality and the role it played in U.S. foreign policy."

-Melvin R. Laird, former Secretary of Defense and nine-term Member of Congress
